Ivan ......As a very happy Sonos user here ....where do I and others stand as having a ZP90 already and may want the W4S mod?

You can PM me the price if you want.

Side note....how is everyone connecting their Sonos for the best sound??.....optical,coax,or rca's ?

I have corresponded with Ivan about getting an upgraded ZP-90 but not sure when I will pull the trigger.

I have all of my Zoneplayers connected via the optical connections.

Default Compatibility of Wyred 4 Sound unit and standard Sonos?

Hello, this is my first post having stumbled up this thread whilst searching for a Sonos like system which would give me FLAC 24/96 capability.

From what I have read here, the Wyred 4 sound modded Sonos is really good. To be honest in my younger days I was more critical of sound quality - I used to listen to vinyl on my Thorens turntable through Gale speakers powered by my home grown power amp. Moving on 20 years, like many I have got sucked into the convenience factor of digital downloads. However, I have got tired of listening to MP3 and AAC, and even when I stream FLAC from Mezzmo through my Sony BDP-S570 Blu Ray, the sound leaves a lot to be desired.

I have an aging Denon AV receiver (AVR2805) and a mish-mash of Bose and Paradigm speakers and obviously these need a major upgrade. However, I know from playing SACD on my Sony DVP-NS975 DVD player, my ears can still appreciate the dramatic sound improvement of SACD over CD.

I have had a demo of the Sonos and love the interface and the easy multi-room setup, but would prefer that it was capable of better than the default 16/44. I would like to keep the convenience of streaming audio from my PC/server, and was wondering if the modded Sonos would be the way to go?

With the Wyred 4 Sound system would I be able to use the standard Sonos bridge and add standard Sonos systems for my other rooms?

Maybe to do this I would need to have two sets of FLAC on my server, 16/44 and 24/96?

Other solutions I have been looking at:

PC with High Resolution Technologies Music Streamer II USB DAC
Mac Mini with High Resolution Technologies Music Streamer II USB DAC
Rotel RDG-1520 (however not FLAC 24/96 capable unless you go via AUX port)

Thanks for your help

The W4S modded zoneplayers will only play 16/44 files just like the stock zoneplayers.

"This new custom board is installed in the SONOS and directly converts the I²S into 96kHz up-sampled SPDIF. This new ultra clean low jitter signal is now available through both the Coax and Optical digital outputs. The SPDIF output's sample rate can also be factory configured to 48, 96, and 192kHz.

The sonic benefits are quite dramatic. An entire level of low level grunge (harsh) is removed from the sound. This improves the low level detail and imaging. The bass is now much tighter and controlled inner detail and transient attack are both greatly improved."

thank you everyone for your help.

So perhaps I should not get hung up on the trying to achieve 24/96 resolution. I had previously read a white paper on the B&W blog that talked a lot about jitter, but wasn't sure how much sound quality improvement would come from tightening the jitter vs increasing the number of bits & sample rate.

I got a older Cullen Sonos Mod 44kHz version and found that the bit stream was no longer bit perfect. I have lost some details in my HDCD's since the Sonos can no longer play at 20 bits.

I tried a few times to talk to Rick Cullen, but he never got back to me with any suggestions. He said he would get someone to look into it, but he never did even after talking to him several times over several months. Cullen Circuit went under and Rick Cullen started to work at W4S since he had a relationship with them.

I have ordered a new clock circuit from a company in Europe several months ago, but I have not had the time to install it in my ZP90. I am hoping that this will be a better option.

The I²S mod is a different mod done by W4S. I did not think it up-sampled to 96kHz. It was made for the W4S DAC-1 and DAC-2 which are meant to be very good.
