Default Itunes/MacMini for Music Server

I use my Mac Mini hooked to my Pre/Pro via toslink cable and I think it sounds great. I've reburned most of my music in Apple Lossless. Should I use the Itunes Equilizer or keep it off? I have it off now thinking that it artificially changes the sound of my music. I don't want it to change the way it's "supposed" to sound. What do you all think?

Thanks.

I believe you mean you have "ripped" most of your music to HD in Apple Lossless... However I would recommend to NOT use any EQ unless it is based in the sound card directly, something that say Lynx gives you... even then, it is a crapshoot unless you really need to make an adjustment to a poorly recorded piece.

So basically, don't change it. The only time my EQ gets messed with is when I am listening to my laptop on the airplane through the headphones.

I recommend rip to AIFF (uncompressed). ALC is heavier on CPU/RAM to unzip which may have some drawbacks on the final result. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

Yeah, no EQ & no sound check is best.

If you are going to go straight uncompressed, WAV is your winner.

I thought AIFF & WAV are the same. Besides, iTunes can't play WAV files and I'm an Apple fanbuy.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm glad to know the Eq is a no no. I was worried about it artificially changing the sound anyway.
Thanks again!

you also need to try listening to the mac mini with a usb dac instead of the two dollar sound card that is in the mac mini....thats if you really want to hear a significant difference. I heard it today and it blew me away.
no eq

I've used both USB and Firewire to DAC (Apogee & PS Audio). Mini Optical out performed both. Stick with optical to DAC.
