Default Any Military Rifle Shooters?

We shoot M-1 Garand and 'military' bolt-action competitions at the local clubs. Everything is shot at 200yd (off-hand, sitting rapid, prone rapid and prone slow - 2 sighters and 10rds for score from each position).

The M-1 is such an enjoyable rifle to shoot. Between the gas operation and weight it has very little recoil for a 30-06. Patton said it right. The M-1 made a huge difference in WWII. Picked up a CMP 'mix-master' a few years ago. Swapped out the mixed parts and now have a 'correct-grade' 5.4 million Springfield M-1. Have had the wood refinished and balance of the rifle re-Park'd. Great shooter.

Most folks shoot the 1903A3 or 1917 for bolt-guns and the same certainly can't be said for them. They have 'real' recoil. So much so that I just picked up a 6 .5 Swedish Mauser and a 7mm BRNO (Czech - think CZ) Mauser to give my shoulder a break from the 30-06. Will see which is the most accurate and go with that. With its 29 3/4" barrel, might even shoot the Swede in some of the 1000yd events. Should be fun.

Only time I qual'd on a rifle in the Navy (an M-1, no less - don't recall if it was a 30-06 or one of the Navy's .308 models) was on the Pendleton range. That was so long ago and far away I can barely remember. Mostly surprised at just how many Marines there were and how much more physical their training was (I was in the "Nuc" Navy). Seems like they formed up and double-timed everywhere.
