Default JBL Home Theater

I have been a bit confused about what kind of speakers to use in my home theater. I know that JBL is very popular in commercial theater applications JBL Pro Cinema Sound

I would like to start with a good center channel speaker and L/R front speakers but I do not want to overpower the room.

I am interested in JBL for a home theater setup as well. I agree 1KW, their pro cinema looks really good. I had thought about pro audio but worried about amp noise, now that my system will be hidden im not so worried about amp noise but I still prefer cinema speakers. I did locate a pro audio dealer, I believe they are in your area as well. They sell pro cinema amp and speakers. I wont post the link but Ill pm you if your interested!

Default Question sbouy JBL home theater

There is so much JBL expertise on this site, I was hoping someone could help me with my problem. I currently have a media room with JBL 4410's as the L-R-C channels, and one JBL 2245 in each of two JBL boxes for the subs. Surrounds are 4 JBL 8320's. All speakers except for the surrounds are at least 20 years old. I just found out the foam surrounds on the 4410's are shredded, and the foam on the 2245's is starting to go. The 2245's have had the foam replaced once; the 4410's are virgin.

My first Q: I plan to buy JBL 6332's for the L & R to replace the 4410's. Should I get a third 6332 for the center, or can I make do by buying a CBT 50LA with its 8 2" speakers for voice and placing it horizontally as the center channel. This is more cost effective, but I am concerned that as voices pass from the CBT 50LA to 6332's, there may be a noticeable difference. Do I need a third 6332 for the center channel, so all 3 front speakers are the same?

My second Q: I plan to get the 2245's refoamed or reconed because I love them - they produce awesome sub frequencies, and there is no need to replace them. How do I know whether to ask for reconing or just refoaming? The cones are pristine; the foam surrounds are cracked, but I don't know how to tell whether I need spiders/voice coils? I don't want to trust the local dealer who might tell me I need reconing when I don't and then use a cheap recone kit from China. I would appreciate any advice anyone can provide. Thank you!

sandstar.......Welcome to Audio Aficionado.

You don't say where you are located, but one of the best JBL speaker repair facilities in the country is The Speaker Exchange in Tampa, Florida. They won't try to sell you anything you don't need to bring your drivers back to factory specification. Take a look at thier site (reconingspeakers.com) or call them at 1-800-849-6972. They can solve your repair issues.

sandstar....Welcome to AA! I will echo what Dan has said, and can vouch for The Speaker Exchange's work as I have had them do several jobs for me, including reconing a pair of LE14H woofers, and the reconing of a 2245H. If your cone is in pristine shape, as you say, I would not see a problem with simply refoaming. The spiders generally last many, many years and if there were any issues with the voice coil, you would know it, I would think. You can always solicit their opinion, and as Dan says, they won't try to sell you anything you don't need. (However they may tell you that the foam surrounds they have available are aftermarket-as JBL does not supply foam surrounds-only complete cone kits. Hence the only way to have a 100% JBL driver is to recone it). I opted to recone my 2245H driver instead of smply refoaming it because when I bought the system, the cone had a slight ding in one of the ribs, purely cosmetic but I decided to bite the bullet at that time and do a full recone.

Good luck and welcome again to AA!

Pete
