I remember when I was a kid the cartoons and comic strips talked about force field protection. Watch this video YouTube - Trophy - Active defence developed in Israel

David.......Thanks for the link. Truly amazing technology. Now if they could shrink it down and put one in every soldiers back pack.

Actually, if they could reverse the technology, and sell it to unwitting suicide bombers, that would be a good thing.

They blow themselves up, and no one else gets hurt

we have similar systems...
it's basically an automatic shotgun (a big one, lol)
or similar to a claymore mine, charge propelled fragments...
senses target
and fires at it...

we have active armor also, when a shell hits it, it blows out opposite
Newton, for every action, an opposite and equally, net = 0

there are such things for radio or cell phone operated devices
a guy with a pushbutton is hard to stop...

I've sometimes wondered about that. From my prospective, when an explosion happens it exerts force in all directions. To me, that means it would also push on the "fixed" surface as well (i.e.- the person wearing the armor).

Now granted it won't be as much force if designed correctly but that force has to be absorbed or redirected by something. For instance, the recoiless shotguns that Browning makes/made. The rearward force was absorbed by the recoil spring(s).

Then again, I'm not an engineer...

Will occasionally attend our local IEEE dinners and the last one had an armor developement specialist (UofM PhD in physics) from the Aberdeen Arsenal talking about armor design and projectiles. Amazing technology. Shaped charges for active armor, projectiles of all sorts (think RPGs) and IEDs is amazing and amazing inexpensive. Today's explosions definitely are not going all directions. Think of the cost for a used amp or less and made in the local terrorists basement. Scary world out there.
