Based on specs only (I haven't heard them), the 6332's should be great off axis. If you haven't done so already, have a look at the frequency response curves in

Re auditions, perhaps try audiolines. They are based in Chicago.

jdandy, by the way, why do you use two 6328’s for your center channel rather than just one?
pi314.......You will have all the dynamic range you need using the JBL LSR6328P speakers. With a maximum sound pressure level of 108 dB, and coupled with the seating distance you stated, you will be front and center in the action. I have also used the LSR6328P as near field monitors where you sit within 4 feet of the monitors. They are very clean, solid bottom end, and sound good when playing at a low volume or cranking. The Room Mode Correction system provides adjustment capabilities to allow electronic control of room modes. The high frequency driver is a titanium composite high frequency dome using JBL's Linear Spatial Reference (LSR) design, and ensures flatter-off-axis response.

The reason I use two LSR6328P speakers for the center channel is because I have the JBL LSR6312SP subwoofer place in the center of the room under my 52XBR widescreen. In order for the center channel to sound like the center I used one LSR6328P on each side of the subwoofer. This gives me a nice wide center channel, well dispersed across the entire seating area, and creates a well balanced audio presentation with regard to the LSR6332 speakers that are suspended on the wall for the left and right front channels.

In the photo, the Sonus Faber Cremona Auditor speakers on the stands are not part of the 5.1 surround sound system. They are connected only to the tube system in the left hand rack.

smmbear.......First, welcome to Audio Aficionado. Glad you found us.

I am using two JBL LSR 6332 mid field monitors in my studio/home theater. I originally used the speakers strictly as monitors to auditioning mixes of live recorded music, but now use them for the dual purpose of monitor speakers and as left and right front channel speakers in a home theater set up. I use a SpeakOn patch bay in the studio control room that lets me quickly move the speaker's inputs to other amplifiers in the control room and studio so I can use them for whatever purpose is needed at a given moment.

How do they sound? Fantastic is the first word that comes to my mind. The are a bass refelx, 3-way speakers using JBL's Advanced Linear Spatial Reference design that ensures flatter response across a wide listening area. The three drivers are all from JBL's pro line, not the home line, and can handle goobs of power, and produce serious sound pressure levels. I have routinely pumped 350 watt peaks into them. They sound just as sweet and clean with that kind of power as they do with 50 watt peaks, just a damn sight louder.

The JBL LSR series speakers were designed to fill recording studio needs for wide frequency respose, and wide dispersion, capable of high sound pressure levels when required, yet still sound natural, and neutral at lower levels. They are pro monitors, but not like the speakers that JBL and other manufacturers produce for live sound reinforcement. Those type of speakers aren't designed for close monitor locations, or full frequency response since live sound is generally always done with biamplification using seperate high and low frequency drivers. This is probably why your experiments with other professional speakers have been less than rewarding.

I can tell you from my own personal experiences with a long line of JBL speakers over more years than I care to brag about, the LSR series is excellent, sounds spectaular on music and sound tracks, and is built to standards that allow real world abuse without a hiccup. My entire 5.1 surround sound system is JBL LSR series speakers. Trust me, they put you right in the middle of the action.

Pete.......Yes, the mid/high frequency and port arrangement is rotatable. JBL designed the speaker to be able to keep the wave guide for the tweeter correctly positioned whether the speaker is placed vertically or horizontally.

Why don't more of use these for playback in our 2 channel systems???

Back in the day JBL was always better than good enough...

Stephen.......It pains me to say this, but JBL's home line of speakers have, for the most part, been redesigned to hit a lower price point for the home theater in a box crowd. You will find a lot of that level JBL product in many mid-fi HT systems. The family that wants to do home theater for under $1500.00, including the television, is the target. JBL has manufactured hundreds of thousands of 5.1 speaker systems that hit the $499.00 to $799.00 target. While I can appreciate the business aspect of these corporate decisions, I lament jeopardizing the JBL brand image in the quest for greater profit.

Fortunately for the higher end market, JBL has not abandoned its roots. The K2 S9900 is a perfect example of JBL's continuing commitment to high-end home audio. The same is true for JBL's professional studio monitor speakers. They are designed using much higher quality components and cabinets, designed to a totally different standard than the Best Buys models. Unfortunately, for the consumers, locating stocking dealers with these speakers available for demo is difficult to impossible, so the general public is typically unaware of their availability.

I have a past history of years in radio broadcasting, as well as in the recording business, and have maintained access to friends and suppliers of pro level equipment, not just JBL speakers. I have heard the LSR series speakers installed in several locations, and knew in advance that when I built my studio, these would be the speakers of choice. I orderd mine from a pro music company that also rents large scale audio systems for live concerts and other venues. I waited five weeks to get the LSR6332's, and the LSR6312SO subwoofer.

If a person knows specifically which model JBL speakers they wish to purchase, finding them isn't difficult. It is just difficult to find these JBL speakers set up for retail audition purposes.

Dan...it pains me as well, to agree with your assessment. It's not like the good old days, in the 70's and 80's, for example, when you could just walk in to your JBL dealer and listen to "the real deal".

Not surprising, I guess.

A shame though... it really looks like some of those studio monitors in the "pro" series would make excellent 2 channel speakers...

Kinda a shame the number of "un-atractive" speakers that do not get much notice these days....

Think of the number of wonderful vocalists, musicians, that will never get noticed today because they are not "beautiful"
