What's not to like. It's a keeper, in my opinion.
Yes, you are spot on. However, my hesitation is in terms of the upgrade path I had developed before the W4S DAC 2 came home for the audition. Namely....

D100, then on to either the MC302 or MC275 XI. Then, maybe, a Mc pre in between the two.

There's nothing wrong with using and enjoying the DAC 2 in the present rig, of course, but it makes me less likely to make the next leap in the near future. One option is to make an upgrade to the speakers first. Perhaps some Contour 1.4s. That would put me in a position to better appreciate the electronic upgrades as they are installed. The Dynaudio 140s are really nice, especially paired with the REL T-5, but I think I'd enjoy things more if I at least felt the speakers could handle the better AQ of the electronics.

Yes, this hobby has many, many opportunities to think of new ways to spend one's resources. Howard's (hkval) urging to me at one point frequently comes to mind, namely, don't worry so much about the technology, just sit back and enjoy the music!

I plugged the AppleTV directly to the W4S DAC 2 instead of using the HDMI connection to the TV and routing it to the DAC. When we proceeded to start watching a Netflix series that we've been working our way through, both Mel and I said, "Wow!" simultaneously. She then went on to say, "What did you do this time?"

Guess I might be keeping it.......
You eliminated an electronic bottleneck and therein lies the truth of optimizing your interconnect strategy to take advantage of the components you have that provide a direct impact on the quality of the sound.

Good choice, John!

Today I tried a Yaqin cd2 buffer on the dac2. USB, Jriver, 192k flac of audiogon wake up your ears, dac2, to the yaqin to the arc sp16, Mcintosh mc402, legacy focus speakers.

I tried it with several tubes. My 2 faves on this setup was voskod and western electric. I also tried siemens, ge, and tung sol.
I did make the female voices a bit softer and the bass slightly less and it also widened the sound stage but, it wasn't as deep. I actually thought it was warmer sounding without the buffer in place!!! I preferred it without the buffer in place. The dac 2 by itself just sounded better. Not sure if there is such a thing as too much tube? Because the preamp is tube, maybe it was just overkill? OR if i had a better tube buffer in place like a Musical Fidelity, it might be a different story but for now, the dac 2 sounded wonderful by itself.

Correct, but I'm not keeping the DAC 2. I've decided to stay with what I have, do some upgrades in my aviation training, buy more music, and maybe invest in better speaker cables. Maybe a year from now, go for a whole cloth change. I'm thinking Mc.

John.......Well at least you gave the DAC2 a solid audition in your system. That's the way to go.

Agree, Dan. I now know that my system can be significantly improved. The little Dynaudio 140's are proving to be much more able to handle improvements in the system than I had thought could be possible at their price point. I am also very pleased to know that Mel is starting to recognize and enjoy the improvements in AQ.

I will continue to do minor upgrades, such as speaker cables, IC's, dedicated power line, and, perhaps most importantly, acquire and listen to more music!

I am still extremely pleased with my DAC-2. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
