Luxman M-800A, hmm I don't think I own a black tie.
That Luxman is the first amp that really just made me really want to give up my MC275V. It sounded real with a sense of life that was, well made me laugh, I was enjoying myself so much. If that is what class A sound is about, I will have to buy a black tie. The EAR-912 I had in my system, did something to voices that was so real, I didn't realize how important a pre-amp was to the system. All the other instruments had a solidity, and realness that was quite amazing. IT made me REALLY appreciate how well the MC275V makes music. I had an esoteric dv-60 and that was really clean but something about the high frequency, the Ayre 5x-e, How do they do that, smooth and dynamic, and perfect (to me) in the high frequencies. I am just lucky I have a black tie dealer with a kind streak. Mark Last edited by markc2; 04-21-2009 at 07:21 AM. |

I do own a black tie, but wearing a Spongebob T-shirt right now.
I have to admit, I've really fallen in love with the Burmester stuff. I've got a 911 mk.3 power amp and the 077 preamp is on the way, using an 011 until the 077 gets here. Very nice combination, very neutral and un solid state sounding. The nice folks at Burmester are trying to convince me I need their 069 CD player instead of the Naim 555 I'm using now, so we'll see about that... |

Tough job you have there. The only time I was able to listen to Burmester was at RMAF last year. I was very impressed by the sound in their room. They were not using their large speakers but the ones they did really solid and fast. Did not really have sufficient time to tell if their belt drive table was worth such a sizable investment. Jim |

A very nice write up in the latest Hi Fi + (plus) on the Focal Grand Utopia EM. Roy Gregory probably does some of the best reviews in any magazine.
I heard these at RMAF last year and they can compete with any of the ridiculously priced hi end speakers out there. In the UK they are about 110K pound sterling. |

Does it mean one is better than the other ... given the constant in sources and amps. Or is it like cars, just a matter of preference and taste? Cheers!

You are correct. At that level it comes down to more than sound. Do not forget the 3600 lb. MBL 101 extremes. A mere $250k before discount. |

What they did was take (2) 101e speakers without their sub-woofer cabinets and invert the one on top and attach it to the support so that the are opposed to each other. They then developed stand alone sub woofers cabinets with built in power. So each side has two woofers, two mids and two tweeters plus the sub woofers. There was a pretty extensive review in The Absolute Sound a few months ago. |
