Here is Ivan Fischer sharing his thoughts on Mahler 9... it's definitely worth the watch.
[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJnpbhadKcc&mc_cid=d4542771d4&mc_eid=7a978 4811e"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJnpbhadKcc&mc_cid=d4542771d4&mc_eid=7a978 4811e[/ame] Might just take the plunge and add Fischer's Mahler 9 but already have the Bruno Walter, Michael Tilson Thomas and Sir John Barbirolli. How much is too much Mahler? Just wondering if anyone has heard this yet? There is Fischer's lovely earlier readings of Mahler and then there is the Channel Classics sound... so can I convince myself to go one more on Mahler? Oh you and those silly rhetorical questions. :-O
"So masterfully composed I don't feel anything needs improvement." Wonderful to listen to Fischer talking about Mahler's 9th, the motifs, the tonality - I love this stuff. Graham - thanks so much for posting the video! |

Tim I kinda figured that was the going to be the right answer. So yes I think I can see another Mahler 9 looming but I'll definitely be waiting on your early review thanks Julian.
That notion of a musical heartbeat and the dimming light is just so beautifully poignant. Fischer is so warm and inspiring in that video and he shines such light on Mahler and the 9th. |

An interesting read...
Mahler by the world's greatest conductors - a Gramophone article where the interviewer visits 11 of "the worlds leading conductors" to talk about Mahler. Each conductor discusses one symphony, plus Das Lied.... Suggestions are then made for recordings of each - based on Gramophone reviews.
I don't know if Gramophone is in the habit of not dating their output - this article is not dated so a context is unclear. It may be circa 2010-2011 based on the intro note. |

Wonderful video, and shows Iván Fischer like he is: a humble and most kind man, but oh so intelligent. Makes me want to listen to that symphony which is exactly what I'm going to do now. Thank you Graham!
