Magnometers and Tape Machines/Cds

I just bought a CellSensor Magnometer. I tried it out on my two racks of Cds- each rack has about 700 Cds on it as well as my two Teac 3340s'. The meter picked up a lot of ELFs.

Is there anyone who degmagnitizes their Cds? Can having properly demagnitized Cds improve the sound quality?

This is all very interesting to me and new?

What device s do you use to demagnitize Cds? Can I use my Han D Mag on Cds?

Any thoughts, Advice etc.

Just how magnetized can a cd made of polycarbonate and aluminum or gold get? A little static maybe, but magnetized????

This really sounds like voodoo, smoke and mirrors.

Just because you can imagine something doesn't mean it happens in real life.

Well, I am not an expert on this subject; but I did take my new Magnometer and use it on a rack of Cds and some other pieces of electronic equipment the there was a significant reaction on the magnometer. The meter went anywhere from a third to two thirds up across it's dial. I am in the process of doing some informal experimentation on this subject.
Here is what I do know in terms of audio not other electronic devices ie cell phones
- The Drivers of your speakers can build up a ELF Field of magnitism.
- The CDs you play can also build up ELF Fields of Magnitism.
- Of course Reel to Reel tape machines and Cassette Machines can as well.

here is a question.
Would you put a moderately charged Cd into a $5000, $10,000 or $15,000 Cd Player?

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!!!!

A good Magnometer runs about $40 or so.

Unfornutately I am leaving on a trip to China in a week and will not have time to see how it all works until I return.
Perhaps I will spend today looking into it for now.

I don't think it is totally smoke and mirrors.

I think the history of digital is littered with accounts of what shouldn't have an effect but does Down to differences in sound between two CDs made from the same master and sent to two different production facilities. Digital's far from the perfect medium it's purported to be. Indeed I've done blind tests where both the type of metal and plastic used in manufacturing was varied and that impacts the sound. Winston Ma's FIM discs, widely regarded as some of the CDs on the market, are the product of such experimentation. And Winston is a fickler for the sound.

Well thanks for the advice. I am new at this but if we could all agree that you need to demagnitize a reel to reel tape machine and or a cassette deck; then how far away are well from other types of audio equipment?
I used my magnometer to demagnitize on of my decks and as I approached it a second time after demagnification, the meter became quiet as it works also by an intensifying beeping sound.
I'll bet you wouldn't want you baby or a young child sleeping near a lot of magnification!

Scott.......Using an electromagnetic eraser to bulk erase recording tape, and a smaller version to demagnitize the record and playback heads on a reel to reel tape machine is an entirely different subject. That type of demagnitizing is an essential part of magnetic tape recording, as is the magnetic forces used to create a recorded tape.

Yes, JDandy you need to use a demagnitizer to erase recorded tape etc; but how do you know if you have gotten rid of all of the magnitization unless you have a magnometer to measure the amount present. This process in itself would warrant the purchase of a $40 magnometer.

I still also feel that if you are in the presence of a moderate to large amount of a magnetic field it can't be too healthy over time. Did you ever see one of those huge metal electrical poles outside of your house? Well, would you want one of those in your back yard or next to your bedroom. I think the philosophy of reducing magnetic fields in and around your home is a good thing to do and at the very least could not do any harm. So why not invest a measly $40 to see where the magnetic fields are within your home and then try to reduce them.
I still think that this is not false science.
