I've had the URC MX950 for about 5 years now. A very good remote. I did pay to get it programed. I've had it reprogramed for new equipment a couple of times. It's very easy for all family members to use.

I used to use them, but the company was so draconian to extremes about refusing to provide access to the required software and updates that I bit the bullet and replaced mine with Harmony remotes. I've never looked back. I won't touch them. Run away!

I've been using their remotes for the past few years and what bugs me is they're not all compatible with later versions of the Windows operating system. I quit using my MX-950 when it was orphaned when Vista was released and I'm afraid the MSC-400 will follow suit one of these days too. But I do think they're some of the best remotes out there, and the MX-1200 is one sweet unit.

I just purchased another MX980. I have had no compatibility problems with the software editor on Win Vista, Win 7 and now Win 8.

I must admit, these URC's are not for everyone. The programming can be a little tedious and head-scratching, but I like the ability to make a custom program for whatever unit I have. If you want simplicity, then Logitech is the way to go. Didn't they decide not to do remotes anymore, though?

Windows compatibility is not consistent throughout the entire URC lineup. And it also depends on the Windows version you're using. The MSC-400 will only work on Windows 7 if it's 32-bit. I'm having no problems with my MX-980, MX-1200 or MX-5000 using the latest Windows operating systems.

I am looking at the MX-980 with the MSC-400. I would love to get some sample Complete Control Document (.CCP) files to look at.
This looks like it is going to be a bit of a learning curve playing with the software so far.

Have been looking towards a granular IP centric solution to replace Harmony. I'm looking at URC, but product supply appears to be too consumer restrictive. Not interested in value-added consultative services to achieve an implementation. That leads to $120 an hour post implementation for any change control.
iRule is looking more and more attractive. |

The MRX-1 does not appear to work well with the MX-980 since the MRX-1 is a network based device and the MX-980 does not appear to be able to use RS-232 data from the MRX-1. Am I missing something?
I had thought I would pick up a MRX-1 along with the iPad app to go with a MX-980 and a MSC-400, but it appears that the MRX-1 and an iPad can not communicate with the MSC-400. IR commands could be send between the two devices, but RS-232 and state information does not appear to be shared. The MSC-400 has memory and macros which can be triggered from the remotes, but not from any IP based devices like the iPad. I can not find a product similar to the MSC-400 for wireless devices in the Control Complete world. The Total Control world is another world with different remotes. The MRX-10 (Total Control product) does appear to be similar to the MSC-400 but will not work with the MX-980. I am new to the URC world so please help me correct any confusion with my investigation. Thanks. Chad
