Jim.......You may have hit the nail on the head when you said, "I am sure that part of it was my lack of interest in fine tuning their position in the room", especially with the JL Audio F112. Between the Automatic Room Optimization feature, and the other fine tuning adjustments on the Fathom, it can be smoothly integrated into your system without being overbearing or objectionably intrusive at the extreme botom of the audio spectrum. It just takes some serious effort and time to get it right. I have spent over six hours, across two days dailing my subwoofer into my PMC's and the system as a whole. Once the Fathom is set up right it becomes an integral part of the whole, not an add on that appears to be an intruder. Of course, all of this is just my personal opinion. I have never auditioned the MBL 111e speakers, so you have the experience with their sound.
