Default Shindo and biasing tubes

Hi everyone,
Now that I have a pre and power mono bloc Shindo set up I find myself surfing forums about tubes and the first question that comes to mind is why are they all talking about biasing their tubes?

Is this something one does with a Shindo setup?

Not sure about Shindo gear, but you should, if able, to check the biasing every month or two to make sure the setting is right. This will help in the longevity of the tubes, the sound of the amps, and to see if their is no problems.

Biasing tubes is like setting the timing on a car, or making sure the TT is running at the right speed with a strobe. Essentially, it makes sure that the tubes are being run at the proper current that the designer intended.

You would have to either buy a tube tester, or have access to one, to do this.

Nope, that will test your tubes. You need, at least, a digital multimeter and, preferably, instructions from the manufacturer. Please do not try at home without professional guidance as the experience can be...shocking. If specific instructions on how to bias the amp are not included with it, it is generally self-biasing. PLEASE ask your dealer.

I believe some Shindo power amps are fixed bias, so when changing output tubes they will most certainly need to be rebiased to suit. If you have no experience doing so it's probably best to have a competent tech or your dealer do this for you.

I believe the new Haut Brion is fixed bias with accessible pots per the AD review.

My Cortese allowed the bias to be adjusted via bias pots using a multimeter. My Lafon 300Bs do not require biasing. Just a data point.

Hey, how about those Beatle re-issues!

Kev313- Thanks, had a Major brain fart on the tube tester. Wow, so far I have assumed my Corton Charlemagnes' are SELF-Biasing. Yikes, I better check that out.

Did you change the tubes in them ? If not, you should not need to check the bias....
