Quote:
There is also some detritus from older systems- a pair of vintage Quad II's that were tweaked at one point by Dahong Setoo (sp?) and a pair of Crosby Quads lurking behind the racks. (The racks are all for the video system which runs off a 220v step down to isolate it from the hi-fi). Oh, i've got the odd Decca ribbon, and bits and pieces of other systems, although i sold off alot of loose ends a few years ago, including a bunch of quasi-vintage ARC stuff). I had a Lyra Parnassus for a long time, the magnets were worth more than i paid for the cartridge. And, of course, my beloved, but crusty old Quads, which are sitting, boxed, in the basement, in dire need of restoration. (I would only plug them into the wall at this point with the fire dep't standing by). I was an electrostat guy from about 1973 until around 2005?, when i made the switch to horns. The Lamm/Duo combination is synergistic. (I had Audiopax 88's when i first got the Duos). The big Kuzma table has bottomless depth, is quiet and articulate ( i had the Kuzma Reference with Tri-Planar before that, a much easier table to live with). The Airline arm is fabulous sounding but the air pump blows, literally and figuratively. It is the best of Slovenian engineering on the arm and the quirkiest assembly of Italian 'know-how' on the pump. I wear a wet suit sometimes, going into the pump room, for fear of getting spattered with oil. And that pump ain't quiet. But there you have it. We can talk about older systems, including faux HQD using the Quads, triamping (ugh) and my early experiences with Dynaco, Phase Linear and Triple Advents some other time. |

Street: We can't really relocate til we sell our house in NY. We just listed it a few weeks ago, and have had some nibbles, but it ain't sold yet. (The market here, unlike Austin, is still wobbly from the crash and lost about 1/3 of its value, at least outside of Manhattan).
So...., hopefully soon. We will probably make a trip in June, just to do some more prep stuff. Can't wait, honestly. While my life in NY has been good, I'm ready for the next step. And, i have been pondering what to do about the system, it may get stored temporarily, particularly if we rent when we first get there. Also, looking at downsizing, maybe even a townhouse -although that would be a big change. I like the privacy of a single family house, but am not interested in the upkeep, and would like to come and go without worry. I actually posted a thread on Audiogon recently about what I might do to scale the overall size of the system down without compromising sound quality. I was persuaded to keep the vinyl or the best of it- I'm not ready to make the leap to a digital system as my serious system yet. (Yes, i know I could spend 80 grand on dcs, but that's not where I want to put money right now). I'd rather buy the Bohn House. (not that i'm going to- you know it?) |
