Accuphase power consumption & IEC 60065
Case: Accu poweramps have their powerconsumption listed two fold:
The Watts in idle and the Watts in accordance to IEC 60065. Without exception the 'IEC' current draw is much higher. A47: idle 210 Watt - as per IEC 60065 410 Watt. If we look at the rear panel of the A47 we see 410 Watt printed. A47 just taken as mere example here. The full IEC 60065 pdf document seems not to be freely available.. From what I see it was revised per 2014. Maybe our electrical engineers can shed a light on this? |

IEC 60065 specifies safety requirements for audio (and multimedia) gear. It's important to know how much (mains) power your equipment draws out of your wall socket, to prevent safety hazards in your environment (e.g. overheating, fire). The IEC 60065 value just represents the total maximum power draw (under the standard's specific conditions, e.g. mains voltage 250V). The idle value represents the actual power drawn, when there is no audio signal applied. Since in class A amps the bias current is set for rated power output, the idle values are relatively high. Idle values of class A/B amps are lower relative to their IEC specs, because bias current is initially set for an output below the rated one. That's about all I can tell you. I hope, I could help a bit. Martin |

Thanks for reply, I do think you gave full answer on this case.
If I interpret rightly, the idle current draw IS the actually measured current draw in Watts. Our A47 example draws 210 watts from the wall, not 410. Since it is specified as Class A up to 45 Watts it does draw 210 Watts continually, opposed to other Class AB. So the IEC tells us the figure of 410 Watts in which the A47 operate to full safety. Something like car manufacturers who guarantee a certain topspeed. Most never try or reach that topspeed, but it can, and it is capable and safe to do so. Forgive me the layman parabel. |

When you push beyond and up to maximum power (which is approx. the double of nominal power) then it will draw up to 410W. Martin |
