---- Hey, do I know you?
* Are you Bud Clarke from Indian Rock? ...Or are you Wilson, the sailor? ** I rented Bud's cottage for couple years a long time ago, right by the lake, last home. ...And I also rented Frances' place above on the hill, for seven years. ...Paradise Ranch was part of my view. Take your time, do a good job, don't lose any screws. Next, ask a friend that knows best about which power cords you need for each component. Don't buy esoteric stuff, just the strict essential. ...Same thing for the interconnects (analog stereo, and perhaps digital too; coaxial digital is better over optical). ...And then some decent speaker wires; but check the speakers first for any damage to the drivers. You certainly must have a good friend living near by, and who is into good audio sound; he would be your best helper and advisor. And we're here too, just for you (and them too); so if you have any questions at all, just shoot. ______________________ * What kind of music do you like? ...Do you know Van Morrison? Do you like Classical music? ...Solo piano? ** The Nak (Nakamichi) Dragon (tape cassette deck) is the limo of all other tape cassette decks. But in the year 2012 (soon to be 2013), tape cassette decks are mainly used by hardcore audio fanatics. ...They still play music, but very restricted as compared to high rez audio files, or SACDs, or DVD-Audio discs. And, you need cassette tapes to play on the Nak Dragon. ...You have any of those? And with time cassette tapes deteriorate (they just don't last forever); and depending of the compositions of the tapes (oxide, ferrite, chrome, metal, etc.). Got a turntable there? ...If you don't know much about TT, perhaps you should simply set the CD player. Anyway, any McIntosh gear can be brought back to specs; that's one of the best part about McIntosh. Plus the retaining value. ...It is probably the longest standing classic high-end company in the whole world. It is a unique company, with excellence in its track record and longetivity, plus it is still well alive and kicking. Last edited by LordoftheRingsEE; 11-22-2012 at 05:12 AM. |

Hi Fred,
I wanted to finish responding to your post and your comment on “what to do” – that is a very nice system that you have been given. If I were in your situation I would consider having the amp and pre-amplifier serviced. In both cases the controls can be lubricated and cleaned and the bias can also be checked on the amplifier as well. The Speakers I would check the surrounds very carefully….usually it is an idea to try and pinch the surround material….if it is brittle in any way then it must be replaced (not a huge deal) Once your system is fully serviced it should give you many years of trouble free service or you can confidently sell it if you are looking for something more modern. Either way I would suggest servicing. I can provide you with a with some local service tech’s in your area that do good work if you are interested.

Thanks for all the info. I expected that a service and /or inspection would be the correct place to begin. So, yes I would love to get a referral to a local service tech. I was getting apprehensive about shipping these components around the country for a "tune up". I do not have the original crates, or even boxes so local transport in my vehicle would be the best. There we go - up the stairs again!

Pure Sound, North Vancouver, BC (He is no longer in North Vancouver...and is now located in Burnaby btw..) Minsoo is an excellent technician and is very honest. I also find his service rates to be reasonable. A good guy to get to know, he has looked after me very well over the years.
