When you achieve real wealth, power and influence you put aside the trinkets that the mere peasantry have to content themselves with, such as your poultry (pultry?) Porsches & Maybachs, and buy the only vehicle that truly befits one's status in the world (aside of course from cousin Yugo)

Some amusing posts but somewhat lacking in imagination. Why not aspire to something like a Goggomobile; peerless; Reliant Robin; Isetta or for a real statement the DeLorean or one of AMC's notorious efforts. All good suggestions but not really answering the question in the original post.

Maybe I'm getting old and cynical. I can go out and buy whatever car takes my fancy (including a Ferrari 250GTO) but maybe that has made me question why. I put together my audio system because it sounds great and I can use it to the full. The effect on other people didn't figure at all.

So enlighten me, you owners of Lambos and Ferraris that are used as boulevard cruisers: why? I'd like to understand. If you get to drive it in anger and really enjoy the full performance; that makes perfect sense.

My life is split between Boston and the UK. Living close to rte 128, the choice of a Russian Zhigouli is perhaps not too idiotic: have you seen those Mass drivers?

Why does anybody buy anything?

The just plain want to. There doesn't have to be a good reason. A lot of purchases don't have a good objective, well thought out reason. I think the higher up the ladder you go, the more emotional the reasons become.

Out of curiosity, do you ride in the back seat of your Zeppelin or do you drive it?

I have always lusted after exotic cars as a kid; had all the posters on my wall growing up. I remember the 5' long poster of a Countach like yesterday. Built all the plastic models too!

I got my very first Porsche in 1984 it was a brand new 928. Then came my first Porsche 930 Turbo in 1987, followed by my first Ferrari 328 GTS in 1988. The Countach appeared in 1989. For a few years I owned all three marques. Over the next 25 years, I pretty much owned most every exotic I ever dreamed about. I have owned more Porsche's than any other; all 911/997 based.

Even today, I still own 2 Porsche's and 2 Ferrari's. Although none of them are daily drivers, I get much enjoyment from the pride of ownership, detailing, and the occasional outing. I own them for me alone, I don't race them or take them to shows.

Anyway, I will always love my sports cars.
