The build quality of Mercedes has gone down hill the last few years.

I just bought my first Merc a month ago and while I am 100% happy with it, I do agree that it is not built like those in the 70s and 80s.

I can say so much as - the BM's are performance cars while the Merc's are comfort cars. Of course, the scorchers would be the Porsche, Ferrari's, etc, which are out of my reach.

Those of us in the US have a hard time comprehending the price of cars in Singapore where you have a 180% tax. So a $60k BMW or Merc becomes $168k last I heard.

I have a 89 and 90 model S Class and while I enjoy the handling the seat comfort and ride on those model years does not compare to large american cars or trucks. The seats in those Benz's are durable just not comfortable.

I also like the looks of the new Jaguar XF. It's in the same price range or a little higher than the Audi S5, but Jaguar reliability has been a long standing issue, particularly the electronics, and a quietly kept secret when possible. This still clouds my enthusiasm for their vehicles. I may test drive the 2010 Jaguar XF anyway, hoping that Ford's electronics engineering expertise has filtered into Jagaur's design and production.

The European cars are much more taut and more a driver's car with firm suspension and I can see clearly how they would be viewed as less comfortable in NA. Japanese suspension is middle of the road but still too loose for my taste. Personally I like European style suspension and handling. Seeing a car swaying for seconds after it has stopped is too much for me! |
