Default MCD500 observations....

Last night I was listening to my TV sattelite through the MCD OPT input. Every once in awhile I was hearing a low frequency distortion. I was worried at first....and thought it might be coming from the TV signal.

Today....no sound. The coax input was working and the cd's would play. I then hooked the OPT to two other sources. Worked fine. Whew....I was worried for a sec. My sattllite receiver OPt out is defunked. Stinks as there isn't another digital out option from that unit.

Anyway...as I was changing cables around...did a little test....

I have a custom music PC player with digital coax out to the MCD. I would play a ripped lossless song and compare to a CD in the MCD playing at the same time. then toggle the inputs on the MCD....

I can't hear any difference between the CD playing on the MCD500 and the music coming from the PC. Seriously...I tried hard to find a difference. I did listen at the same "levels"

Anyone else tried this?

Good news....I got a soft small paintbrush and stuck it in the opt output of the sattelite unit. Wiggled it a bit...and now it works....

coolness....

learned something with the troubleshooting though..

JC.......You are now qualified to moonlight as a DirecTV installer.

Hey, in tough times it's always good to have a second skill.

Assuming jitter is taken care of (or at least minimized) and error correction is doing its job, this is not a surprising result. I have had very similar results with the MDA1000. I rarely spin CDs any more.

You're lucky guys,

I tried that also and the quality was very low compared to my drive ( Linn Ikemi ).
I think that depends also on the quality of the CD rom drive and way of data extraction of the computer : see the Naim HDX that reads 5 or 6 times the CD when copying it to the HD to avoid reading mistakes...
I learned also on AK at that time that there is a program in some computers that actually treat the optical output and that could degrade the sound. I don't remember the name of this program. You know when you have it if the volume control of the digital output is still working....

Best wishes,
Jérôme

I am using a Squeezebox through an MDA1000 and I have tried several times to hear any difference at all in the sound compared to a CD - I can't. At this point, I don't remember the last time I powered on my CD player.

JC, Good idea with the paint brush. Maybe a little debris obstructing the flow?

Direct TV may have a better unit by now. Not sure.

Well. I have my mint MDA all boxed up. I'm having a hard time letting go of it though. I miss all the inputs and the "look". I don't even own an SACD. But I can't swallow owning both.

Is there anyone out there using a squeezebox or any other digital pass through from a PC with the MCD500? The MCD500 will only accept PCM signals..right?

I'm using an audigy sound card with its pass through with good results. But I was thinking of going another route just to to try out.
