Bach - Alio Modo: Passacaglia & other keyboard works transcribed for viols
Fretwork
Harmonia Mundi (2005)

It's a bit odd hearing Bach's contrapuntal organ and harpsichord works played on viols, but it's nevertheless a very pleasant recording by the group Fretwork. Sound is good as well.

Higdon & Tchaikovsky Violin Concertos
Hilary Hahn, violin
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Vasily Petrenko conducting
DG 2010

Following on Carlos' Petrenko/Liverpool album, here's more from this combination, with the addition of Hilary Hahn. The Higdon is a fascinating composition, with beautiful soft lyrical passages transitioning quickly to tension, drama, and explosive moments. Very interesting music that I think will take multiple listening sessions to fully grasp. Playing is brilliant throughout, and sound is good.

Despite a number of wrong notes and an out-of-tune piano, this is an electrifying Rach 3. The Mozart is good, too.

Debussy - La Mer
Respighi - Fountains of Rome - Pines of Rome
Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Frits Reiner

A classic.
Good to start another very sunny day.
It's been unusually dry and hot here...

I wouldn't especially recommend this one.
I find the sound rather thin (the AP remaster is maybe better?).
And there are better interpretations available of 'La Mer'.

Debussy - Children's Corner Suite - Petite Suite - Danses sacrée et profane - La Boïte à joujoux
Orchestre National de l'O.R.T.F., Jean Martinon

Very well executed and recorded album ('74).
This is an early remaster ('89), but it is good.

New album cover of the same remaster:

Arrived this week. Wasn't even aware of this music before seeing Carlos' (?) post about it here a few weeks back. Very pleasant music well performed and well recorded.
