Listening (again) to . . . Vivaldi Bassoon Concertos

Been reviewed before - and I do like the bassoon concertos by Vivaldi (also the ones by Mozart) Two good ones follow.

Bassoon concertos? Yes, it sounds weird, but I think Vivadi wrote concertos for every instrument in the orchestra. Anyway, these concerti do sound very fine, the music-making is of high caliber and the brooding sound of the bassoon is extremely well captured by this Naive recording. Check it out.

Amazing how beautiful the growl of a well played bassoon can sound - and this one is excellent as is the flute playing of Gazzeloni.

The chamber orchestra I Musici is a near phenomenon with most any music they've played and I've never experienced a sour note or bad recording by them. Founded in 1951, The group continues to make beautiful music even to this day. (with replacement musicians, of course). One of their founding members and first violin, Felix Ayo (born 1933), is still active.

A very nice recording, made in Quadro in the 1970's and remastered by Pentatone here on an excellent SACD.

My wife and I attended the University of Alabama football game Saturday - and jubilated in witnessing the Alabama Crimson Tide's victory over the #1 ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Of particular interest here, though, might be the Alabama Million Dollar Band - which performed at halftime. Around 400 members - with at least 20 tubas and no less than 76 Trombones . . . Didn't play much classical music (unless you count John Philip Sousa) but it was exciting - and the music was LIVE.

Default The Heifetz Collection

I found The Heifetz Collection today at an estate sale. This is the same sale where I also picked up the McIntosh vintage system a few days ago. Please tell me about the importance of this collection. This is a photo from Amazon. I am shocked at the prices on Amazon and eBay for this set. I am enjoying the CDs now. Everything is intact including the packaging box, booklet and the medallion which is inscribed with signature and number. Thoughts?

Congratulations on this great find.

I don't know much about this except that Jascha Heifetz = landmark violin performances from the recording golden era of the 1950s and 1960s.

I'm sure others here like Julian can make some insightful comments on the set you found. In the meantime, enjoy some excellent music-making.

Default Sibelius: Symphony No. 2

Some Sibelius this morning...

Sibelius:
Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43
Romance in C major for strings, Op. 42
Göteborgs Symfoniker, Neeme Järvi

This symphony seems to have an Italianate warmth compared to some of the other Sibelius symphonies. The Nordic Göteborgs Symfoniker plays this local music very well with a good sense of purpose and direction. The early 1980s BIS recording is excellent.

Default Mozart: A Little Light Music

One more disc this afternoon...

Mozart:
Gallimathias musicum K32
Ein Musikalischer Spass K522
German Dances, K567
German Dances, K602 in C
German Dances (3), K605
Contredanse in C, K587 'Der Sieg des Helden Koburg'
Contredanse in E flat, K607/K605a 'Il trionfo delle dame'
Contredanse in G, K610 'Les filles malicieuses'
Orpheus Chamber Orchestra

The "Musical Joke" is odd by definition, but Mozart is incapable of writing bad music so it sounds charming and funny here. The rest of the disc makes for great listening as well and the conductorless Orpheus Chamber Orchestra plays with remarkable clarity and confidence. The DG sound is very good.

Relaxing in between work and seminars.

Not the smoothest music, but I like the intensity with which he plays!

This kind of music no longer appeals to me, so I put this disc up for sale on Amazon!

My thoughts are that I'm getting older when CDs are part of estate sales. I know little of their collectibility other than to do what you've done and compare prices elsewhere. Congrats on your find. I hope you enjoy the music.

As perhaps you'll discover listening to your set, Jascha Heifetz was (certainly one of if not) the finest violin player of the 20th Century. Look at any album cover of his work and you'll see no name before his. I put the likes of David Oistrakh, Zino Francescati, Arthur Grumiaux, Ida Haendel, the younger Menuhin, etc. in my top nn list, but each time I make an argument for someone consistently better over the course of their career than Heifetz, I lose.

Heifetz set a new standard. This is part of the rationale behind the value of your set.

Very nice observation. It's gone to my ears by the second movement. Yet compare to Tapiola with similar origin.
