This arrived today. It has all of the same positive traits of his superb Book I: clarity, virtuosity, tasteful rubato and dynamics. The sound is very clear and gives a seat in the hall perspective rather than placing him in one's listening room.

Mozart - Wind Concertos
Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra

Has been posted often here.
A 'light' ending of this evening, not that it is not highly artistic, but in the sense that is so universally easily digestible.
Delicious music.

For me this morning at work with the headphones on:

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy
The Piano Concertos
Robert Schumann Philharmonic Orchestra Chemnitz, Frank Beermann

This is a very good set. Kirschnereit impresses.

Default An interesting Comparison

A few weeks ago I had a group of Audio folks in for our fall gathering. One of the things that took place was an interesting comparison. The original Mono Shaded Dog Vinyl of Moussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibiton RCA LM-2201 played through my ClearAudio Master Solution/Jelco 750D/AT33mono Ltd. Edition combo, and the RCA Living Stereo SACD reissue thru my Sony XA5400ES. Since volumes were just very close but not matched, this is not a A/B Comparison, nor a vinyl versus CD comparison.

The resounding result was in favor of the mono pressing in terms of a live presentation, and a more organic presentation. Many feeling they were more involved with the music. I am fortunate to own both, as I feel they both have their merits.

Many thought the mono was actually stereo.

A very interesting day indeed,
Jim

Interesting that the SACD adds Night on Bald Mountain

Listening to . . . Serenade
Live at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival
Heichiro Obyama - Artistic Director

Works by Mozart, Brahms and Dvorak

Recorded in Concert at the St. Francis Auditorium, Museum of Fine Arts, Santa Fe, New Mexico, July 30-31, 1995 and July 27-28, 1996. by John Atkinson - and Produced by Stereophile Magazine

A Stereophile Recording - reported upon by the magazine, with 10 pages of coverage devoted to the making of this CD at: http://www.stereophile.com/features/209/index.html

Very well recorded - John Atkinson spent vast amounts of time recording a series of CDs for Stereophile and the results were very good. I think I have all of the CDs in the series and, since they are mostly collectors items now, I shall treasure them.

Darn U.S. Postal Service, Jim, my invitation must have been lost in the mail. Well, there is always next year!

This morning
"Sanguineus and Melancholichus" - C.P.E. Bach Sonatas
Performed by Florigeum (including a younger Rachel Podger)
Channel Classics 11197, 1997

Gorgeous music and very nice recording of these sonatas played by the chamber group Florigeum, consisting of flute, two violins, cello, and harpsichord.
