As I've mentioned in another thread, I've been collecting model cars for some time. Mostly Corvette's and other American Muscle Cars.

I've decided to move on and to focus on some Ferrari models now.

What better way to start a collection than the magnificent 250 GTO?

Here are some pics of the first Ferrari in my collection. (Since I can only dream of ever collecting real Ferrari's, model cars will have to do... )

Here are some quick facts on the 250 GTO.

Total of 36 were built from 1962 to 1964. These cars command well into the 8 digits before the .00 now. That's over $10 million dollars. Rumor has it, most of these cars survived and accounted for.

I had a couple Ferrari Formula One 1/12th, 1/18th scale models -- but they were trashed during a move from Germany. Broke my heart.

The only one I'd be interested is in the LARGE Ferrari F1 (1/5th scale) -- but, when available, goes for around $4K+. That would make my day -- someday, anyway.

People spend 10x that or over $100 million for a original painting by Picasso for example. You don't think a rare Ferrari is worth that much? Many collect them for pleasure of owning a piece of history and "rolling art" and view them as an "investment". Although prices fluctuated wildly on Ferraris in the past 20 years, time will only make these cars worth more and more.

Yes, but over the last year is when I got out of the habit of arranging my sleep so I could watch the practices & races on Speed channel. Still my favorite & when I lived in Germany (6 years), attended as many F1 races as I could. Followed that up with the inaugural F1 race at Indy in 2000 which was my last F1 attendance.

I thought I would keep this thread going with some interesting cars and the relevant info, pics and youtube videos when available. I am mostly concentrating on Ferrari right now but have a pretty large collection of other cars.


Today's car and my latest addition to the collection. The 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso. Lusso stands for "Luxury" version. This particular model is modeled after the actual car that was owned by Steve McQueen in marrone metallizzato (chestnut brown metallized)!

Some interesting background info:

At the 1960 Geneva Motor Show, Ferrari introduced a touring version of their potent SWB race car and many owners could then buy near-copies of the cars they saw on the tracks for weekend drives.

The SWB was the first Berlinetta body that was suitable for production on the 2400mm short-wheel-base chassis. Sergio Pininfarina called it “the first of our three quantum leaps in design with Ferrari.”

Ferrari offered the SWB in distinct specification which would be suited for for the demands of the racetrack, highway or sometimes both. Cars varied to suit individual customers’ requirements. Some of the very fastest models were called competitzione and used lightweight aluminum-alloy bodies, while the lusso road-going version had a fully trimmed interior, softer springing and steel body.

The Colombo designed engine was a version of the Ferrari V12 used on earlier 250 GTs, but for 1959 it used the 'outside plug' cylinder head with 12 intake ports. Generally this produced 250 to 280 bhp depending on state of tune.

Early versions had drum brakes while Dunlop discs were used to the model in 1960.
