Thanks! You are probably right that the expense of upgrading the SP3 just for the USB upgrade might not be worthy.
The BDA3 looks nice! But it cannot do multichannel audio/video like the SP3.

Hi

We are looking at a new USB module for the SP3. If you want Dolby Atmos that would have to be a new unit.

I agree it does not do multi-channel. While I own the BDA-3, it gets minimal use as I prefer multi-channel, discrete or not. For this, the SP3 is really all I need. It is a superb processor for multi-channel. I am not particularly concerned with DSD as I own several thousands of CDs, and I will never ever be able to get them in DSD so I don't concern myself with it. However, if I had an affinity for classical music, I may think differently.

Hi Grit

No - nothing happening on the SP-4 front. We are still doing well with the SP-3 - guess some do not care about ceiling speakers.

This is good news to me. I have heard ATMOS and it truly felt like a gimmick. There is absolutely no reason for music lovers to embrace ATMOS.

The new SP4 (if there were to be one) could be a combination of the multichannel capabilities of the SP3 with the latest DAC capabilities of the BDA-3 and the streaming ability of the BDP-3 (Roon-ready).

That appeals to me but only if those DAC/Streamer capabilities support multichannel. After all, the SP3/4 are multichannel preamp/processors.

If you buy the BDP-2 or 3, all your problems with USB will be resolved and you will have the extra option of storing all your digital music and get playback quality better than the best CD player. I play all my 2 channel music on it but convert it to either 7.1 Dolby Pro-Logic IIx or Stereo7 7.1. The very best use of the SP3 is music in surround; discreet if possible, but lesser surround is always better to me than 2 channel. Plus, I'm using the SP3's balanced digital input. It makes a difference.
