My wife and I have a wonderfully blended marriage, especially when it comes to finances. No separate accounts but I do encourage her to keep some emergency cash set aside. She doesn't but she knows I do. She mostly takes care of day to day expenses where I concentrate on long term investments.

Here's the story...... When I was young and living at home one of the things my father and I bonded over was fish aquariums. This spilled over to my children until one day the children where all grown up, out of the house and I had about a dozen tanks spewed out around the house. Another hobby of mine was audio which Susan gladly shared. Within the first week of marriage I believe we had purchased a new system albeit modest in price. The fish tanks were declining in health because of less and less attention until one day my lovely wife had enough and said "Look, I'll make you a deal. If you get rid of ALL the fish tanks, I'll will agree to new audio equipment." To which I replied, "Do you realize how much the pieces cost that I'm looking at?" Her reply? "The offer still stands." The rest is history.

Now if I can just get her to understand why we are keeping the boxes.

The large empty boxes were what annoyed my wife the most, not the equipment. Even though the boxes were way back against the wall of the storage room and not in the way of anything. She was happy when they were all gone.
