Magico - Carta de Amor on ECM with Jan Garbarek on soprano and tenor saxophones, Egberto Gismonti on guitar and piano and Charlie Haden on bass. A live recording from 1981 with tunes from their two studio albums and a gorgeous version of "La Pasionaria" from the Liberation Music Orchestra songbook.

Jan Garbarek - Magico: Carta de Amor CD

Michael Formanek - Small Places on ECM with Tim Berne on alto saxophone, Craig Taborn on piano and Gerald Cleaver on drums and shruti box. I believe that any recording with Craig Taborn and Gerald Cleaver is worth checking out, this new release by Formanek is no exception - NOT a " blowing session" with much more emphasis on compositions and instant compositions.

New Mingus box on Mosaic, disc 6 "My Favorite Quintet", 5/13/65 Minneapolis.

Both those ECM recordings just mentioned are also on HD Tracks, the Formanek in 24/96, the Magico in 24/48.

Mingus was ahead of his time in '56!
Recording quality is not so good as his work from '58 and later.

I have the mono vinyl and it sounds great, as does The Clown from the same period. Maybe the CD mix/mastering isn't so great?

Dean, I have quite some albums of Mingus in that series, and they all sound better than this one... Yes maybe a faulty CD...
