…complain like hell and demand Bowers replace them with D4 :-) …to the query looks like a defect to me, rust under the paint even?

More likely just a drip of lacquer. Can't be serious because those heads are molded aluminum.

I thought the engineers polished them for days when being produced…surprised they missed that - maybe he needed to go to SpecSavers ;-)

Default B&W 802D3 Owners Club

I am looking to upgrade from the anthem AVM 60. Movies sound great, but music sounds lackluster. I am considering either a McIntosh MX 100 (home theater processor) or a McIntosh C 2700, which would only upgrade two channel music through a pass through.

I’ve been told by local dealers the anthem units are geared for movies over music. The Marantz 8805 shares the same Dac as the MX 100. The c2700 is a tube preamp 2 ch.

Currently using 802d3 towers with rotel 1585 bi amping each (2x200w to each tower).

Do you all have any opinions on either one of these components? Is the better upgrade, if it’s one, to change the home theater processor or add a dedicated 2 channel music processor?

The mcintosh MX100 home theater processor upgrade would be an every day change, but the mcintosh C2700 2-channel pre would be a big change enjoyed maybe 1-2x month.

Thanks

I had the AVM 30, old by current standards and it was ok with movies, but music was not good. Moving to Bryston SP3 was a very big upgrade across the board. SP3 is awesome for movies. SP3 is maybe getting dated with their DACs so I’ve ordered a Bryston BDA-3 for music. This DAC is awesome.

Luxman is another great option.

Never considered brytson or luxmam. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm listening to my 802D3s driven by a pair of Bryston 7B3 monoblocks and a Bryston BP26 preamp, and I am very happy with the sound. And so are my audio-nut pals who have heard the B&W Bryston combo. It is a straight up music rig, no video.

Must sound great!
FYI the SP3 has a two channel by-pass mode that reviews has said it equals the BP26 preamp. It passes all the digital only runs in analog mode.

I heard 800D3 with BP17, and 4B SST2 at a dealer streaming Tidal music. It was awesome! I wanted to purchase them and the Centre match but that was when B&W was sold out on the line with D4’s coming out.

You should decide which is more important to you, movies or music? Unless you have dedicated theater/2channel rooms it never is an all or nothing proposition for the vast majority of individuals including myself. For instance, my ratio is approx. 70% music 30% movies. I decided to concentrate on music and gear my purchases toward more musical devices. I can comment on the C2700 only. It's a fantastic versatile piece of equipment. It adds that tube sound to my 303D3 and the DA2 USB holds it's own for a combined pre-amp/DAC. I run C2700 in passthru to my AVR for movies. What I give up in movie experience is more than made up in 2 channel listing IMHO.
