New Synology DS720+ NAS
Well...I upgraded. I returned the DS720+ 2-bay and got the DS920+ 4-bay box. Essentially, it’s the same box but with 4GB imbedded ram vs 2GB and two more bays.
Great machines that can do so much more than store crap. |

To use an aviation analogy; just like fuel in the tanks and runway ahead of you, you can’t have too many bays!

I just installed the 920+, including the additional (2x) GB, with 14 terabyte drives all across. Then, I WAS PRETTY CLOSE TO OUT OF SPACE, and added an extender. Of course, virtually all of the space was consumed by music, so all is well.

Unfortunately. I have about 11,000 albums in the NAS though.

I have a 918+ using RAID10 (which is overkill and possibly a waste of space for a 4-bay unit) and also have a 920+ that I've yet to spin up. I've maxed the RAM out on both of them as I run some virtual machines for work, otherwise I'm not sure I'd recommend that upgrade. As I rip my CD collection the 920 will be the main NAS, 918 will be a backup (it also backs up my home computers) and I also have several USB drives that have computer backups as well as music backups.
I have considered getting a burner than can burn M-Discs for music backup, but I think it's more convenient to just use USB drives and just pick those up when they're on sale. The Synology devices are amazing to have as an online storage source. I'm not sure I'd ever use a cloud solution at this point, if my 2 NAS servers and multiple USB drives all fail at the same time, I probably have some more serious issues happening. |

RAID 10 is not a waste; it’s more belt and suspenders to keep your pants up. Seriously if you can afford the disks and have the space, do it. You will never lose data. Just please, PLEASE back up to an external device and do not rely on RAID for your backup plan. If you are running out of memory (RAM), there are options. No matter what the specs say, you can definitely run more than 8MB reliably. These are fantastic machines with even greater software!!! |
