The speakers do appear to be quite close together. With my Infinity Rs1b I have the speakers further apart than the suggested placement with a slight toe-in. Its all highly room dependant of course, so I'd guess like all of us you've experimented with their placement and have reached a happy place. Thanks for sharing.

Update. Great example of 'never say never'. While stupid happy with the MC275s and the MC452, I made the leap on a great set of MC2301s over the winter for a good price from a great seller.
Just got them to Pennsylvania and with the help of a friend, now have them heating my audio room and throwing off sounds in all directions. 3D has arrived to my room. Having listened to three different current model McAMPs on the Strads in my room, I can only say the 2301s provide the drive of the 452 with a more upfront midrange of the 275s with much more three dimensionality than either of the other two amplifier models.
