"shorting" plugs?
Hi can anyone comment on whether there would be any benefit (or detriment) of using some Cardas RCA "shorting plugs" I have on the unused inputs of my LP-2 preamp?
Thanks so much! Chris |

It is claimed that their use is supposed to lower the noise floor by preventing spurious RFI, etc., from entering the unused RCA jacks...

Hi
Unfortunately, I can't say anything about the Cardas RCA "shorting plugs". I use the informed end caps from Vortex on all unused connectors with success and a 75ohm plug on the digital connector of the CD player. The reproduction appears more relaxed and open in the high-frequency range. I can't see any change in the noise floor. To what extent it makes sense to short-circuit the unused connections, I cannot judge. just read different opinions about this on the internet. Depends on a try. |

Here we go...
Went over to the shop to drop off and compare a new (to me) pair of speakers and do some listening with an out of town friend. Dennis showed me this when I got to the shop...
Untitled by analog addict, on Flickr The speakers I dropped off were a pair of Vandersteen 3As which I had acquired a few weeks ago. We compared the Inspire 3.1s to the 3As, and decided that in this application, we liked the Inspire 3.1s better. Part of this is due to the immediacy of the sound, and part due to the size of the sound stage created by the the 3.1's phase coherent crossover network. Bass is much better than you might expect from a speaker this size, but with the porting system tuned by the golden ear of DJH, the bass is articulate and extremely fast due to the smaller speaker cones. Untitled by analog addict, on Flickr Believe it or not, the Inspire 3.1s sounded "bigger" than the physically bigger speakers. Have some veneer on order, hoping to see a couple of new pairs of 3.1s soon. Lastly, we listened to the 3.1s on the 6GK6 amp exclusively, despite having all sorts of other amps to listen to. Dennis told me he hasn't listened to anything else since I loaned him the amp. I'm expecting the GK6'er to be something special... Stay tuned... Hello Analog Addict,
I need help with the 300b DJH Amplifier turned on, strange noise from the speaker, amplifier turned off. Fuse defective, replaced with 3.15A slow, the new fuse blows immediately. where may the problem lie. The rectifier works in the KT88Sep, the two 6SL7s work in the phono stage. I can therefore rule out a defect in these tubes. Unfortunately, I can't test the 300B. I only have one slow blow fuse left to test and I don't want to use it up unnecessarily, because I can't get new ones over the weekend. who has an idea what the problem could be. |

Introducing.....
The new Inspire GK6'er SEP amp
Untitled by analog addict, on Flickr Untitled by analog addict, on Flickr Untitled by analog addict, on Flickr Untitled by analog addict, on Flickr Untitled by analog addict, on Flickr Dennis is over the moon about this new amplifier, and if as expected, it's even nicer sounding than mine, I don't blame him. Here's the distortion measurement.... Untitled by analog addict, on Flickr -45db on the second order distortion, and essentially no third order distortion. Clean as a whistle! And a view from underneath. Untitled by analog addict, on Flickr Price on this unit will be $2000, or $2200 for a unit that will include an Alps gain/volume pot. Tube compliment is a 396A/5670, two 6GK6s, and an 80 rectifier. This amp produces 5WPC with an 80 rectifier, and will produce close to 6 wpc with a 5Z3 rectifier. PM me to place your orders!
