The Cello plays off perfectly against the orchestra (in the concertos... or against the piano in the other selcctions)... neither one eclipsing, or being eclipsed by the other. Wonderful performances all around.

If you've heard of Davidov but not this particular disc, I hope you'll check it out. If you've not heard of Davidov, I think you're in for a treat.

BTW, it's playing at near concert levels on my main 2-channel system as I write this. Glorious!

Can you tell I think quite highly of this disc?

Thanks!
I'll give it a try!

Something more to share here as well... so, the Mondonville disc I mentioned above represented (until about 11 minutes ago) the entirety of my collection of his works.

That said, Our exchanges in this forum over the last half-dozen or so posts had me surfing (yet again) to discover more of his work... and WOW... I think I just tripped over a pot of golden hued G clefs

Frankly, my jaw is still stinging from having hit the keyboard rather abruptly after sampling these Amazon clips of Mondonville's Grand Motets. I'm not familiar with William Christie or the performers on this disc... but the samples have my brow furrowed and my fingers a-flutter as I begin doing more online research on these admirable musicians.

In addition, I would direct you to read the first amazon review on the linked-page. That individual is a font of Mondonvillian knowledge (or at least has craftily paraphrased some decent liner notes).

You can almost immediately hear Mondonville's showmanship in these works. I ordered a "like new" disc from a nearby state and very much look forward to checking my mailbox over the next week or so.

Ideal late night listening.
An earlier recommendation from this thread, and a very good one.
This is gorgeous music, played wonderfully by these 3 experienced masters.
Sonics are excellent.

Fabulous singing in the Taneyev, and the fugue Taneyev presents is breathtaking.
I guess you can judge the quality of a recording by the number of times it ends up getting played. I keep reverting to this one very often.

( No, this is NOT the only cd I have.....)

Best regards from NL,

Knowing some of us are Albinoni fans, I'll put the question out there... which of his works are your favorite?

In my case, the very first Albinoni music I purchased (back in the early 80s) was this Philips disc of Cinque Concerti Opus 5. These works, to my ear, ride the very crest of the baroque wave. While I treasure this disc, I would love to discover a similar performance (or dare I hope, even better performance) but with the best modern recording technology applied. Someone like a Linn or Channel Classics should, IMO, stop whatever they're doing and put all power/focus/effort on releasing a high-rez artfully recorded Opus 5... and hurry up, I don't have all day.

(note that because Amazon does not have any audio samples, I linked over to JPC and although the cover art is different, it is the same music)

I'm not sure that the Albinoni Adagio is my favorite of Albinoni's works (although I do really love it) but I am sure that the Gary Karr - Super Analogue Disc LP recording is the best recording of an Albinoni work of music I've ever heard.

A true audiophile extravaganza!

And, thank you for reminding me to listen to Albinoni, because I am listening to it now.

Adagio d' Albinoni
Gary Karr - Bass
Harmon Lewis - pipe-organ

Hi Julian,

I have an XRCD24 FIM release featuring Mr. Karr and, from what I can gather, it includes the very same performance of that adagio. It is truly stunning. One can practically smell the rosin.
