This morning listening to
Boccherini: String Quartets Op.6, No.1 & 3/Op.58, No.2
Quartetto Italiano
Phillips 1977

I acquired a batch of 1/2 dozen records by the Quartetto Italiano on Phillips and ran them through the record cleaning machine. This is the first one I've played, and it's quite nice sound and performance.

Away from my country home and system for more than 2 weeks now. Got to listen to a live event instead. Great performance by the soloist. Bravo!

This composer was unknown to me so far.
So I have no reference, but the 'house style' of Gli Incogniti is there.
Amandine Beyer and her crew touch the right strings in me!
Lovely music this is.
Sound is impeccable.

A bit of tape on a snowy afternoon:
Solti
Chicago
Wagner
Sir Georg Solti/Chicago Symphony Orchestra/Wagner
Selected works - 1976 London 1R1 6863 (4 Track 7.5 ips)
Very nice tape, and nice selections very well conducted and played.

I decided to pull out one of my favourite albums.
It is even on my iPod, where there is only room for 150 (SA)CDs...

Matteis - False Consonances of Melancholy
Gli Incogniti
Amandine Beyer, violin & direction

Looking at the title, you could still wonder whether this album is full of sad music.
But from the first notes, you hear the sparkle, the pure joy that Amandine Beyer and her musicians convey in such a wonderful way.
If classical music can rock, this one certainly does!

Playing the 1st concerto on disc 1 now, but what I hear sounds good to me. At least this concerto has nice energy and good melodies. The recorded sound has impact and is sharp (in a good way).

Gramophone Awards 2014, Winner - Concerto
Dis 2 today which includes concertos 4 & 5.

I like these pieces. Fierce playing by Bavouzet, the BBC Philharmonic and Noseda. Orchestral brass and percussion are used to provide nice impact and the Chandos recording is top-notch. Recommended.

Does Gli Incogniti play that or Ensemble 415? The little jacket doesn't say, which is odd since the other jackets identify who plays the other works. (IG is only identified as playing The Four Seasons plus the other concerti on that disc.)

This is just a stunning disc, from the music, the playing, and the sound. I've never heard of Schwarz-Schilling, so now I'm eager to hear more of his music as well as the original String Quartet version of the piece on this disc. It's very powerful--densely contrapuntal.

Default Prokofiev: Piano Concertos Nos. 2 & 3

I pulled out my own disc to compare to the excellent I got from the library..

Prokofiev:
Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 16
Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major, Op. 26
Piano Sonata No. 2 in D minor, Op. 14
Freddy Kempf (piano)
Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Andrew Litton

This interpretation is excellent too and the BIS SACD sound is vibrant and clear. If I had to choose, the Jean-Efflam Bavouzet set might slightly edge past this one, but they are both great musical documents.
