Another fantastic recording from these folks. Man, they just dig into the music as if their lives depended on it. Superb sound.

I really wish they'd record Shostakovich's String Quartets--the intense ones would be brutal beyond belief!

Debussy - Images Inédites; Estampes, pour le piano; Six Epigraphes Antigues; Le Petit Negre
Alain Planes, piano
Harmonia Mundi 2007

Lovely atmospheric pieces well-played by Planes. The recording is well suited to the music, good tone and plenty of air and long decays.

I wish this set included the Violin Concerto. Still, it's a fine collection and well recorded.

Giuliano Carmignola - Vivaldi con molto - Accademia Bizantina - Ottavio Dantone (Archiv produktion).

It's bomb! Nothing left to say.

^^I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of his new Bach Concertos recording.

Whoa...when two masters of their respective styles unite, sparks fly! Excellent sound.

Default Rachmaninov: The Piano Concertos

Just a few more discs before I go on holiday...

Rachmaninov:
Piano Concertos Nos. 1-4 (complete)
Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43
Stephen Hough (piano)
Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Andrew Litton

I really enjoy this set. The playing by Hough is full of virtuosity while Litton is an excellent accompanist. On top of that, the Hyperion recording is of high quality (unlike Hough's Tchaikovsky effort with the Minnesota Orchestra whch sounds rather poor). In summary, this set is a winner.

Giuliano Carmignola certainly doesn't disappoint on this new Bach recording. He plays with tremendous verve and beauty. I far prefer this disc to Rachel Podger's for both performance and sound quality even though the latter is SACD.

Default Saint-Saëns: Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 22

More Hough...

Saint-Saëns: Piano Concertos Nos. 1-5
Wedding Cake - Valse-Caprice for piano & strings, Op. 76
Rapsodie d'Auvergne for piano & orchestra Op. 73
Allegro appassionato for piano & orchestra Op. 70
Africa - Fantasie for piano & orchestra Op. 89
Stephen Hough (piano)
City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Sakari Oramo

...from the complete set of Saint-Saëns orchestral piano pieces. Hough does not put a foot wrong in the 2nd concerto (or anywhere else here) and the recorded sound of the piano is some of the best I've heard. Very impressive set in two well-filled discs.
