My taste in music is all over the place. I teach indoor cycling (spinning) and mix my own playlists for my classes. So I end up listening to a lot of dance music, only a fraction of which is not disposable.

My all-time favorite is Dead Can Dance, a duo made up of Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry, both of whom have also released their own equally spectacular solo material. Their music is hard to describe, so I'd just recommend giving it a listen on YouTube or Amazon (e.g., YouTube - ‪Dead Can Dance - Toward the Within - "Rakim"‬‏ or YouTube - ‪Yulunga - Dead Can Dance‬‏).

I like trip hop, electronica, pop, opera, new age, choral, world music. I'm from Cuba so I also listen to some of the music I that heard in my home as a kid.

Here's a hodgepodge of some of my favorite artists past and present: Massive Attack, Chemical Brothers, William Orbit, Chicane, Manu Chau, Cocteau Twins, Orbital, Coldplay, Sheila Chandra, Sarah McLachlan, Celia Cruz, Sarah Brightman, The The, Ulrich Schnauss, Talk Talk, Roxy Music, Seefeel, Richard H. Kirk, This Mortal Coil. I could go on and on, as music is my drug of choice.

Thanks for asking! What do you listen to?
Jorge: Thanks for replying. I have to admit that I am unfamiliar Dan Can Dance and a few of the other artists that you listed. However, I did check out some youtube/amazon clips. Thank you! I enjoy being introduced to new music. Which of Dead Can Dance's albums do you recommend for a newbie?

I also enjoy your posts. A couple of my favorite threads here are the running 'what are you listening to' threads in the music categories. I'd encourage you to participate in such threads. Please let us know what you're listening to and let us know of your impressions of any new music you try.

I'm currently on a pretty strong classical kick, but I've been all over the place over the years: alternative, metal, jazz, standards, electronica, etc. :-)

Thanks, Karl! As a starter, I would recommend the Dead Can Dance album "Memento," as it's a compilation of their work up to 2005. Here are two tracks from the album: YouTube - ‪Dead Can Dance - The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove‬‏ and YouTube - ‪Dead Can Dance - Ariadne‬‏. I have enjoyed all of their non-compilation albums but "Into the Labyrinth" and "Aion" are among my favorites.

Can you recommend a classical album or two? I have some classical music but don't know if I've ever been kicked by it. Same goes for jazz, which I know is popular among AA members. By the way, I have posted a few times in the "What are you listening to tonight" thread. Great way to discover new music for sure.

Cheers!

Jorge: I like those Dead Can Dance tracks. I tend to like albums where one song flows into the next very well. Which of Into the Labyrinth and Aion should I buy?

Classical. Let's see. Classical is rarely about listening to one song at a time. Further, I've found that classical is about matching music to your mood. Just like anything else, you can't force a slow/romantic classical album when you feel like excitement.

Try this: . If you don't like Lang Lang playing Tchaikovsky, you probably don't need to do too much exploring around with classical piano. ;-)

Violin, try this:

Full orchestra, try this:

All of these have excellent sound quality and are available from HDtracks.com in high resolution FLAC downloads. (24bit and greater than 44khz). High res. really shows off classical, and classical really shows off high res., in my opinion.

Cheers!

Jorge,

The classical music review site Classics Today has a list of 100 classical recordings that would be ideal for starting a library of the best in classical music.

100 CDs for Building Your Library

I enjoy reading the reviews on the site, and think this list is an excellent starting point.

Very cool! Thanks, Julian! As I scanned the list, I noticed that I have a handful of the albums (e.g., Bach, Beethoven, Dvorak, Fauré, Handel and Vivaldi). I don't have a lot of classical music but I'm going to listen to the albums Karl suggested above, as I'm open to expanding my horizons.

Cheers!

Jorge . . . I do want to direct your attention to the thread "What Classical Music Are You Listening To Tonight" . . here on Audio Aficionado. This thread has been an incredible place to learn from others and to find new classical music.

Look at the last post and work backward, or start somewhere in the middle, or at the beginning. You will become immersed in the goings-on of that thread. Read, post, and feel welcome.
