Well, another happy accident. After re-reading Jim's comment about rotating the "renegade" tube traps (one clamping my right main, outside only, and a column at the right wall slightly ahead of my listening position), I rotated the the reflect side to face the front wall. On a whim, I left the right main upper tube trap facing the listening position, but rotated the left main upper tube trap to reflect along the left wall where there are three 9's acting as first reflection diffusors. Holy "new-found air" Batman! The upper register is sparkling clear without being tipped up and the mid-range is to die for. These tube traps are really amazing!

Randy... I agree tube traps make a huge difference, and are in all my sound rooms. Glad you are experiencing so much success!

Default Randy, if you want to "renegade" one step further...

and you have at least one spare trap to play with, here's a setup that may enhance your two-channel program listening. For special listening sessions (i.e., those which occur when my wife's not home to see what havoc I've wreaked with the decor), I've set three Studio Traps three feet behind the listening position, with their diffusor centers facing the front of the room. If the stereo program source has been recorded, mixed, and mastered just so, I get an increased bump in ambience that fleshes out the free-of-the-speakers soundstage with increased reach-into dimensionality and tangibility. Note that that effect is immediately and most noticeable with just a single trap placed directly behind the listener--the two additional traps provide a bit more ambience and a very slight increase in perceived spread, but the centered one gives the biggest bang for the buck, at least in this room.

I think I may have gone a bit overboard. (excess and uncontrolled buying? why, not here ). I have a pair of 4' x 20"s coming and a pair of 5' x 13"s coming. Only problem is I already have traps everywhere.

I guess I will go 20" bottom with 16" tops in the back corners, if the low ceiling permits. I was going to go 16 over 20 on the front wall behind the front mains, but someone forgot to measure to see if he really had 20". Duh.

Think I will try clamping the mains with the 13's ala Jim. With all these columns, it is starting to look like the Parthenon around here.

Lacking 2" of height both front and rear.

The only place to stack the 20's is to block a door. Wonder what the WAF on that is going to be?

Randy...I tried clamping with 11's and didn't like the presentation as much as I do with the 9's. Sonically, things closed up a bit with the 11's, while for some reason placing an additional 9 outboard didn't muck things up. This may be a room/placement-dependent issue that has no bearing on your situation, so I mention it only as background.

As I believe I've indicated before, my wife tells visitors that "we live in the ruins of an ancient Greek or Roman temple"--or alternately, "...in an Elysian forest." So your Parthenon comment is apt.

Sorry about the 2" short-on-height issue. Before you block the door, be sure you tell your wife you love what she's done with her hair...or her newest shoes really look great...or take her out to a fancy dinner.

Probably an unforgiveable sin to treat an MR77 this way, but only a small part of what's atop it is resting on its cabinet's right rear corner, and it's clear of the vent grille. My defense is that I just had to hear what treating the room's right front corner might do, even with nothing more substantial than a 9" 110-Hz-capable trap. And it is just a temporary placement...at least until I can fashion something more permanent--the why of that below.



The trap's a four-footer (actual height 47-1/2"), which brings it to within about an inch of the ceiling, and the diffusor's oriented at a 45 degree angle into the room.

To try it out, I put the Fiedler/Wild Gershwin SACD into the Oppo, parked in my listening position, and...good grief, Charley Brown! Spatial cues that literally had been hiding in the woodwork popped out all over the place. And not just on the right side of the soundstage, which is what I might reasonably have expected given the trap's placement, but all across the lateral landscape, accompanied by increased focus and sense of venue depth. More "sock," too, in the tympani and bass drum strikes present in the Concerto in F, the I Got Rhythm Variations, and the Cuban Overture. Overall, a significant enhancement of the aural benefits already achieved with the modified "attack wall."

So I'm going to have to come up with a permanent solution (once I get some other system priorities taken care of first). Maybe a wall-mounted quarter-round in that corner. But for now, that 9" trap stays...with apologies to the MR77.
