Default What Classical Music Are You Listening To Tonight?

Mendelssohn: The Complete Solo Piano Music, Vol. 1 (a 4 volume set)
Howard Shelley, piano
Hyperion ((2012), 24/96 files

Shelley’s playing is impeccable, and often very brisk. As the BBC said, “When Mendelssohn asks for Presto, Shelley takes him at his word” - you can almost see the sparks flying on a couple of pieces. The largo pieces, on the other hand, are light and airy and not at all ponderous. This is a very enjoyable set, and well recorded.

Someone earlier posted this and noted this is one of the Wilson Audiophile Definitive Recording Pure Analog recordings, very nice!

Default Strauss, R

Returning to this SACD...

Strauss, R:
Der Rosenkavalier - Suite
arr. Artur Rodzinski
Elektra: suite (conceptualized by Manfred Honeck)
Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Manfred Honeck

Again, a robust recording of very engaging music. Too bad their recent release of the Pathétique was not as compelling.

Just a monster of an album, but I don't think it's for most.

Debussy:

A magnificent recording by David Wilson just released as an SACD by Analogue Productions. It's extremely natural and dynamic. The sonic image of the violin is to the right of the inside edge of the left speaker. Highly recommended on both counts: music and sound.
Here is the other Wilson Audiophile album by the same pair...

Beethoven: Violin Sonata No. 10 in G major, Op. 96
Enescu: Violin Sonata No. 3 in A minor, Op. 25 'dans le caractère populaire roumain'
David Abel (violin), Julie Steinberg (piano)

Don't look for fireworks here, but if a pure, realistic and natural recording of these pieces floats your boat, look no further than this SACD remaster by Analogue Productions.
