Default 8ft long sub w/ (4) 18"Obsidian/SI drivers

New member here, and I wanted to show my latest subwoofer I built. This is #24 or so I've built through the years, and will likely get me a little closer to achieving my never ended quest for the proper amount of subwoofage. I have a large Great Room which is close to 1000 sq. ft. in size and has a 110" diagonal projection screen on the main front wall:

I wanted to build a subwoofer cabinet that would span the full 8 ft under the screen, so the dimensions were based on that width. I also wanted to use a Walnut Butcher Block top which came in a 25" deep x 96" wide dimension. The height needed to be about 25" tall to fit right below the bottom edge. The box was tuned to 20hz, as this is for 99% MUSIC, not HT use. I wanted to use 4 of the Obsidian Audio woofers as I have used all the previous Stereo Integrity woofers through the years. They are the tightest, most accurate drivers I've had and outperform the legends( JBL B460, Hartley 24" I've owned) They have about 2 1/2" of travel, will handle 600 watts RMS, and I've had some powered by 2400 watt amps with no failures. Unlike most all the other drivers I've used, these have lots of travel, and are very unlikely to be bottomed out, especially in this configuration. I wanted to distribute the load over 4 woofers, so that they would all be coasting along with no distortion/strain on them. I've built many downfiring subs, but wanted to have the pressure wave firing directly at my chest this time.

I built 2 boxes that are bolted together, so that in the future I could take them apart if needed:

After the walnut top was installed and finished:

I used matching vertical corner strips and then used a piece of black mirrored plexiglas for the ends:

I'll make another post as I'm not sure how many pics I can put in one post.

I used aluminum C shaped channel for the grille frame:

I drilled through for alignment of the Neo magnets to hold the grille in place:

Here are the 4 Obsidian woofers in place. I may swap them out to try out the new Stereo Integrity HT woofers that are taking the DIY crowd by storm.

This is a temporary setup with some Clements RT-7 ribbon speakers as they are "naked" awaiting me putting all new foam grilles around them. I have two pair that I usually stack for my main front speakers, but they are likely to not be able to keep up, so I've got other speakers in mind for replacements.

Not in it's final place up against the wall, but for reference on how it fits under the screen.

I've got to finish hooking up the amp connections ( each woofer will have 750 watts on it ), but will be taking some measurements soon with a PC based program. I'll post it up next week sometime about it.

Beautiful craftsmanship. Thanks for the pictures. It might be hard to get out of your seat with those monsters pumping out some air.

Very nice! As for 18's, also check out FI Car audio subs and Dayton's new 18's.

I would also move your mains forward so they're at least even with that little sub.

These drivers out perform both the FI and the Daytons. It would take 1 1/2 Daytons to equal the output of one of these drivers

Thanks for the heads up. Now that I've looked at their specs, they appear suitable for my next project(slot loaded dipole sub).

The Stereo Integrity HT subs will play deeper than the Obsidian, but the Obsidians stomp the SI drivers up in the actual music range while having a slight edge in sound quality too. Both these drivers are by the same designer whose total goal is to be known for producing accurate, musical drivers. They just haven't had the million dollar exposure of the Daytons. In todays world the Sheeple will always buy the product that has the most marketing. Constant brainwashing finally convinces most people that the product is the best in the world, when it's not....like BOSE.
