Default Am I crazy? 2 18" PRO Sub's?

Preface: I run 4 subs in my HT set up (all are Velodynes, 2 are older HGS12's and the other 2 are newer DD-12's) - one in each corner, so keep that in mind

Ok, so one of my 13 year old Velodyne HGS12 gave out. Instead of fixing it I'm thinking of replacing it. I want to keep the price to under 1,000 bucks and there's a bunch of options in that range from SVS, Outlaw, Rythmik, etc.

HOWEVER - I had a crazy idea, why not get a couple of passive 18" pro subwoofers from JBL or EV? I have an amp that will drive them and I can get 2 of them for under $1K. The specs for these subs don't look crazy impressive, they only go down to the mid 30's but as my friend here at the station says - "consumer stuff might be rated to 20hz but it's probably -10DB, pro specs won't do that".

This would replace my 2 rear Subs with the pro's, so I would keep the DD-12's in front. check out the subs I'm considering below...

Pio.......The JBL JRX series of speakers is price point designed, and may disappoint you, not to mention the rated 55Hz-300Hz frequency response is nothing to brag about when talking subwoofers. The EV sub you mention, at 50Hz-100Hz isn't much better.

I must warn you, your active links to advertisers who do not support AA will not remain. They are against the site rules. You can mention the product and list product numbers, but you are not allowed to post active links to websites that sell them. Do not be surprised to see the active links disappear.

Pio, I doubt the the subs you mention will keep up with the Velodynes, resulting in some overhang that will muddy up the sound.

You know, I thought that maybe the specs might be different for pro audio stuff. I listened to the 18's yesterday and

Well, I went to listen to the 18's yesterday and I was totally unimpressed. I was expecting so much more from such a big driver.

Anyways, I'm going to do more research here - but it looks like either SVS or Outlaw - both have really nice subs in the range I'm looking at.

Pio.......He is something to remember. There are multiple levels of pro audio gear. The word Professional has been so thoroughly abused and misused that it has almost be meaningless.

The "pro" gear you were looking at has been designed to hit a price point that will appeal the the garage band "pros". When you are talking about true professional musician's and groups that perform sellout concerts, the pro gear there is not sold at Guitar Center or 6th Street Music. That gear is often purchased by large concert equipment suppliers, and is generally rented or leased by the musicians on an as needed basis. Musician's Friend is not where to look for gear like this JBL active full sized VT4880ADP arrayable dual 18" subs (25Hz - 160Hz), rated power 3500 watts continuous, maximum peak output 143 dB at 1 meter. That puts the meaning back into the word professional. See what I mean?

Hi Pio,
If you want to up the ante', the best packaged subs out there right now are the JL Audio Fathom series that Masterlu sells. It's all about massive displacement, and these subs deliver in spades. They will go lower, louder, than your current subs, which are already quite good.

If you are a DIY guy, start looking for extreme displacement woofers. Most of these are car audio, but there are a few built for HT. I built a Tumult 15" sub a few years back, and it makes scary bass. Unfortunately the company that made that driver is no longer in business.

Thanks Tom, not for nothing but the speed of the JL Subs is what amazes me.

I was a huge JBL Sub fan since way back, the JL's make them sound like slow motion, no disrespect intended.

Masterlu / Tom

A JL Audio quad set up is my ultimate goal. Right now i just need to replace the Velodyne that failed on my with something under a grand.

Right now I still have 3 subs working and it sounds good, but the eq / set up was set for 4 subs.

Actually, would love to get 2 of the larger ones for my 2 chnl set up as well got to try to hit my bonus LOL

Ps, first time im using the iphone app, really cool!
