The removable head shell was definitely a selling point as I also got an Ortofon mono cart I'd like to use for mono LPs and 45s. The G was just too much of an investment as a secondary TT so an older 1200 was the right move for me vs the GR (which I realize also supports 78). It'll be a bit until I get a chance to hook it up though.
I kind of laughed through the video because it was like - Dude! where have you been for half a century! Those tables have been having removable headshells for decades!!!

He did mention a few of the techincal differences between the G and GR and they do appear significant.

At some point maybe later in the year or next year I plan to send my 1210 MK5 to KAB to get the full treatment.

Yeah it's kind of funny how now that the GR/G are out audiophiles are finally accepting the 1200s. The original was never meant to be a DJ turntable, it just turned out that way and got that reputation.

I've heard everything from a G and GR are slightly different to night and day different. Certainly if I was going for a primary TT I'd go with the G even if I was only getting 5% more than a GR. I think there's something for everyone in the new Technics lineup, but on the lower end you've also got the super OEM TTs like the Reloop as strong contenders.

I like the video, but I'll admit that I'm biased. What I enjoy is what he says about the differences between the SL1200G and the SL1200GR which is what I experienced when I upgraded from the SL1200MK2 to the SL1200G. Maks brings up a good point about the sudden acceptance by the audiophile community of the Technics direct drive turntables. They have always been a good turntable.

FreddieFerric, before you send in your MK5 for an upgrade, you should compare the price of an upgrade vs selling your MK5 and getting a G model. The MK5 will likely get you a good amount of money.

I'm now off to listen to my SL1200G, a new album just arrived! I really do love this turntable!!!

Yes. There are significant improvements between the new and old models that no upgrades can compensate for. These advances are the reasons the new models are accepted as "audiophile grade",, for lack of a better term.

I already have a 10K vinyl rig that is my reference. I put the 1210 in the system just to spin mono recordings. I'll be putting an Ortofon 3M White Mono cart on it soon. The KAB upgrades are not that expensive.

Rewiring the tonearm with Cardas wire from the headshell pins to the RCA outputs will be a significant upgrade since I can use far better cabling than the stock stuff.

The tonearm damping is also reported to offer a sonic improvement.

Otherwise I agree, improving its sound can only go so far.
