Organ music this morning
Saint-Saëns - Symphony No. 3 "Organ"
Vincent Warnier, organ
Orchestre National de Lyon, Leonard Slatkin conducting
Naxos 2014

I like what Slatkin and the Orchestre de Lyon do with the great French romantic and impressionist composers,Mathis is a wonderful performance and a very good recording as well.

Default Bach, J S: Cello Suites

First time hearing this...

Bach, J S: Cello Suites Nos. 1-6, BWV1007-1012
Pierre Fournier (cello)

How can listening to a solo cello for more than 2 hours be any fun? Well, it would be a bore if the composer were not JS Bach or the performer were not Pierre Fournier. This is a classic rendition from 1961 and the recorded sound holds up extremely well; the full harmonic information from the cello faithfully reproduced.

Les Fetes de L'Hebe by Rameau. Finally got a Dap that can do it justice. Superb singing by Sophie Daneman at her peak. Dance able baroque, who'd have thunk it.

Carlos, for a lot of years, this was my favourite version of the Cello Suites.
The sound is indeed quite nice.

Mr. Demachy - Pièces de violle et en tablature
Romina Lischka, basse de viole

We saw this lady yesterday live, and she signed my copy.
This is fine viola da gamba music from a composer who lived at the same time as Sainte Colombe.
Lischka also plays in Collegium Vocale. She's a talented gamba player.

Default Beethoven: Symphony No. 9

Back to basics...

Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 'Choral'
Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Nikolaus Harnoncourt

I've posted about this excellent 14-disc set before and it's hard to find a weak link. Almost everything here is a benchmark performance. The Choral is not an exception and this is a triumph for Harnoncourt and his youthful COE. The Teldec sound is impressive.

Bach - Solo Cantatas for alto / for bass - German Cantatas before Bach
Collegium Vocale Gent, Philippe Herreweghe

My God, are we blessed here in Flanders, with such good Bach conductors!
Kuijken, Herreweghe, geniuses with their own style.
Friday night, we attended the first night of the Bach weekend in Brugge, with 2 fantastic concerts: Collegium Vocale with Cantatas of course, in the Concert Hall, and then the 2 viola da gamba players of the orchestra doing some Bach, Schenck, and Sainte-Colombe in the Chamber Music Hall.
We drove home totally energized!
Although it was well past midnight.

This box set contains 3 CDs.
One with Cantatas for solo bass. Peter Kooy is very good here.
One with Cantatas for solo alto. Andreas Scholl is simply fabulous, and far better than Robin Blaze (Suzuki, Bach Collegium Japan).
The 3rd: Before Bach: Tunder, Kuhnau, Bruhns, Graupner.
