"The MC3500 Mk II is powered by eight EL509S high-power output vacuum tubes. The EL509S tube was chosen specifically due to it having many similar qualities and characteristics of the 6LQ6 "sweep tubes" used on the original MC3500. Like the 6LQ6, the EL509S is very rugged thanks to its robust cathode and associated heating element which produces a high peak plate current capability in excess of 1 Amp."
I took this to mean that Mac will procure plenty of these special tubes for the future and that tube rolling in the usual sense will not be possible. I like this a lot. While I agree that Mac SS and tubes sound similar the sound is not identical. I really like SS Mac amps because they have an inherently smooth rounded at the edges sound. However, I personally would like to try a pair of these amps. I want to enjoy my new plinth for my Thor which should be at the dealer anytime and then installed probably by the first two weeks in December. I may buy a pair early next year. I will keep my 1.25's. Never will sell these amps. A pair of 2.1KW's are very difficult to fit in my room, when and if they ever are built. I think that calculation of 609 watts dynamic watts says so much about the tremendous power associated with these amps. I suspect since Mac always underrates the power of their amps, the 3500's will do much more than 350 watts and 609 dynamic watts. The lack of a need for a fan is a huge plus. It's hard to believe Mac could make them for 15K a piece. They are worth double this. The price may not stay here for long. Best Charles Last edited by Charles; 11-09-2021 at 02:47 AM.
