It shouldn't be as big a jump like D2 to D3, I imagine.. that would make a big gap between 700 and 800... and maybe get too close to 900?

I agree with a small price increase.

If they keep the same design as D3, use the same turbine and driver materials, where BW is not totally re-tooling their factory line for the 800, increase should be minimal. They don't outsource much for parts that go into the 800.

Copper, silver, gold, wood, aluminum have gone up in price overall since last year.

What could they change on the D4 ??

I've had a pair of 803D3 on order since early January at my dealer. The delivery date kept getting pushed and the dealer advised that he heard through the grapevine that the D4 would be forthcoming. So now I'm thinking they weren't able to furnish the D3 as they are going to be releasing the D4 in the near future. I advised my dealer that I wanted to wait for the D4, so I'm hoping to get the 803D4 sometime in the spring or summer of this year. Hoping this will be a nice pairing with my C2600 and MC462. I've been currently running 804D3 with my system.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict at least one big change and a substantial price increase or a 900 series speaker. If I had to guess, time alignment adjustments.

Think people are anticipating this shortly as many 800 on eBay with the usual cliche’ excuses for selling...hope I won’t be one of them :-)

I'm also excited at the prospect of something substantial but realistically it's unlikely to be a revolutionary shift as per the D3 series because B&W retooled the factory at significant expense back in 2015, and I do recall hearing that their engineers were already working on a D4 iteration when the D3 was released.

Most likely is an incremental change as we saw from D1 to D2, which was mostly a retuning of the enclosure and small improvements to the tweeter.

I think it's fair to say that BW is up against the limits of what's possible from their three driver / three enclosure design philosophy, which has its pros and cons. Someone mentioned time-alignment, which is one of the (arguable) limitations of the existing D3 series, but to correct it would necessitate inverting a driver polarity, which was not preferred by BW in their previous subjective evaluations. Of course it is possible that the engineers have been able to further simplify the M-T crossover to a purely first order electrical network, but this is almost always at the expense of vertical axis response above and below the point of phase coherence. Another obstacle is the position of the tweeter pod atop the FST enclose, and the risk of interference effects when the tweeter is recessed for voice coil alignment.

A potential way forward would be to alter their design philosophy and move to a single (Al) molded enclosure that housed both tweeter and FST and also included a tweeter waveguide for diffraction control plus directivity and power response etc.

Although not out of the question I think it's very unlikely that we'll see a move to some sort of active / DSP solution.

Feb 08th, 2021 Q&A with Andy Kerr of Bowers & Wilkins - hinting at new generation of Active Speakers...?

https://www.theabsolutesound.com/art...bowers-wilkins

“Audiophiles have been reluctant to embrace active/DSP and wireless loudspeakers in the past. Has there been a shift?

I’m not sure. I think many enthusiasts have so much invested (on both a financial and an emotional level) in amplifiers, cables, and so on that it’s hard for them to turn their backs on them. I think some of the smarter amplifier brands have made good strides in offering DSP-driven platforms that can complement and potentially improve the performance of passive speakers. Today’s young consumer is growing up in a world where sound comes from one device and is stored or streamed from one device (the phone). As those customers age they may want to scale their audio systems to meet their needs, but asking them to adopt amps, cables, and so on when they have zero track record or experience of that is a tall order. I want to be clear: We absolutely will not stop making passive speakers for so long as there are customers out there who want them. But it’s just as important that we remain relevant.
