John Field: Sonatas & Nocturnes

I’ve long been a fan of Field’s nocturnes, who is often credited as the inventor of the nocturne. Fellow Irishman John O’Conor (under-appreciated, I think) plays them beautifully on this recording.

Nice, calm pieces.

I'm going to listen to more of O'Conor's albums. I like his touch.

That’s a nice album as well, but a different one. The one I posted this morning is sonatas 1-4 and 3 nocturnes, the one you’re playing is all nocturnes and one of my favorites.

This is the instrument Bach composed his cello suites for.
Kuijken is convinced about that.
And I must say, the easiness with whom he plays these pieces convinces me too.
Much less acrobatic placing of the fingers than with a big cello.

The last years, Kuijken plays these pieces on a violoncello da spalla that sounds a little bit smoother.
He played 2 of the Suites (and a violin Partita) in our living room in '17.
I made a video of it, but didn't use an external microphone unfortunately.

Yesterday, one of the more important Belgian composers died of cancer.
He was 91.

The fourth was composed for the 1983 edition of the Queen Elisabeth Competition as mandatory piece. Blumenthal was one of the laureates there.
