Okay, I had time to investigate after Christmas and I quickly found out that the issue was the same. Blown fuse. But I must confess that this time it's my mistake. I realized that I had installed a "fast blo" fuse whereas the original one was a "slo blo". I remember this is what I had on hand when I replaced it. So that's why I think it blew up without much a real power surge. By chance it's actually better as it is designed to blow quicker preventing any further damage. So in the meantime I installed another fast blo but will order the right fuses from Mouser. I am just glad it's singing again!

And for posterity, picture of blown fuse in question.
