Considering my background (military electronics) I would not do this. You are putting incorrect, reverse voltage on the remote's circuitry, very bad. Besides most small devices like this have a diode installed, in such a manner, to prevent damage from putting the batteries in backward.

If you want to reset the remote simply remove the batteries for 10 to 20 minutes and rest assured you have done no harm.
