A person properly trained with a firearm (this includes communication, tactical, and safety skills as well) can save lives, including their own. While you hope you never need to use it, it’s better to have it and not need it, then to not have it and need it.

I always carry. Normally a 357 w/ laser. 9mm at times. My favorite though, a Wilson Combat 45.
New Zealand Police do not carry Firearms. A specialist division of the Police are called out to arrest armed criminals (The Armed Offenders Squad). Ordinary Police Constables do have access to weapons in an emergency - usually locked in the Boot of a Patrol Car driven by a Senior Sargent.
