The .40 seems to be losing popularity. I don't see it completely dying off but I do see use falling behind the 10mm and .45 ACP by a considerable margin simply due to power and ballistic shortcomings.
As a comparison, consider that the larger and faster 10mm will give 624 foot-pounds of muzzle energy when sending a 180-grain bullet at 1,250 fps, while the .40 S&W comes in at 400 foot-pounds with its 1,000 fps velocity, making for a rather significant difference. You can lighten the bullet grain weight somewhat but it still won't pack the same power at comparable distances.
However, .40 S&W is still a viable round and hit has its followers. My personal preference has been, and always will be, .45 ACP.
