Pass XA60.8 with Sopra 2
I tried a PassXA60.8 with my Sopra 2's, as a way to potentially move up to the current generation of Pass amps, from the X600.5s that I am running now.
I can absolutely state the while one would expect the XA60.8s to be up to the task, this surprisingly was not the case. Particularly, the drive and pace of the bass was relatively anemic, even with the needle not moving and at moderate sound levels.
I was extremely surprised by this finding. My brother and I spent a whole evening going back and forth, and it was really pronounced.
I take from this that the Sopra2 need some heavy amperage for the bass to come alive. I am next going to try a pair of XA160.8s and will let you know how they do. Kent at Pass seems to think they have good chance of being able to drive the speakers.
In the meantime, I have just upgraded to Utopia Scala Evos, and have just started listening. The X600.5s drive these with no problem at all.
