As stated, Broadway and Opera are different from movies, with different expectations from their audiences I have had the pleasure (pain?) of playing in pit orchestras for both and found the audiences very appreciative and......older.
The last time my wife and I went to the movies, (It was the Knives Out movie ) there were maybe 8 couples in the theater. And then you're assaulted by all that crap played before the movie, not to mention the 20 minutes of previews. All this while the audience
plays with their phones and talk. Younger also. Or maybe less mature, with limited attention span.
I love to go to movies and look forward to going again once theaters open up. I really would like to see Dune, and I'll pay special attention to the audiences and their ages, and behavior. But I still stand by my opinion that todays audiences do not have the attention span for an overture. I hope I'm wrong.
