Both, but there are other differences between the configurations:
For surround, HDMI from an Ayre player goes to the SP-3, and the SP-3 is set to cross the front LR speakers (KEF Ref 107/2s) at 40 Hz to Velodyne HGS-15s before bypassing to the Parasound JC 2 BP. For stereo, balanced analog goes directly to the JC 2 BP and the KEF 107/2s run full range without subs. The front LCR use JC 1 monoblocks; the surrounds are LS 50s driven by a pair of Parasound A 23s.
Truth be told, most of my recent listening has been files streamed from Roon to the USB port of the Ayre. Charles Hansen envisioned steaming as an important future source, so a good USB port was a priority.
